IceMen Win Season Series with Gladiators in Overtime Loss
April 8, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Evansville IceMen News Release
GWINNETT, Ga.-, Despite a 3-2 overtime loss to the rallying Gwinnett Gladiators, the Evansville IceMen, presented Coors Light, clinched their second season series victory in the last five days. Evansville outpointed the Gladiators 5-4 in the four-game slate between the two teams to claim a win in the season series with Gwinnett for the second consecutive year.
Chris Rumble earned his first two professional points in the overtime loss. A rookie out of Canisius College, Rumble had a helper on each of the two IceMen strikes in the game.
Both sides had their shots in the first period, but the goaltenders stood strong early. With less than a minute to go in the opening frame, the Gladiators were awarded a penalty shot after Daniel Bahntge had his momentum disrupted on a breakaway. Bahntge charged in on Branden Komm, who dropped down then made a flashy leg pad save on Bahntage's penalty shot.
With that save, Komm denied the second penalty shot against the IceMen this season to keep the game scoreless heading into the first intermission. Chris Driedger turned away the first penalty shot against the IceMen in Elmira back on Nov. 29.
In the second period, the IceMen ended the scoreless tie. On a power play, Justin MacDonald fired a shot from the high slot into the net to give the IceMen a 1-0 lead. Rumble earned his first point in the pros with an assist on the play. Spencer Humphries picked up the other helper on MacDonald's seventh of the season.
Evansville added to its lead early in the third period. Rumble fired a shot that Mike Lee stopped. Mark Anthoine found the rebound and knocked it home to make it a 2-0 advantage for the IceMen. Anthoine's eighth of the season also featured an assist from Kyle Shapiro.
The Gwinnett power play would eventually tie the game up at two. Goals from Dan O'Donoghue and Mike Merrifield on the man advantage forced overtime. Gwinnett had eight power plays, converting on two of them.
Just under three minutes into the sudden death extra frame, the Gladiators broke the tie. Tyler Murovich roofed the puck underneath the cross bar to send the Gwinnett fans home happy in the Gladiators home finale with a 3-2 win.
Lee stopped 25 IceMen shots to claim the two points for the Gladiators. Even though he kept Gwinnett scoreless for 45 minutes and made 28 saves, Komm gets tagged with the hard luck overtime loss.
