Knights Sign Matranga of USF

The Corvallis Knights of the West Coast League have signed catcher Ryan Matranga of the University of San Francisco for the 2015 season, president Dan Segel announced Wednesday.
A 5-foot-10, 170-pounder from Mission Viejo, Calif,, Matranga earned first-team all-WCL honors at catcher at Kitsap in 2014. He hit .310 in 33 games, with two homers and 21 RBIs for the BlueJackets.
He started 33 of the 44 games he played in at USF in 2014, and hit .211 (23-109), with seven RBIs. He started 43 of his 45 games as a freshman in 2013 and hit .185 (23-124), with three homers and 18 RBIs. He made the West Coast Conference all-freshman team.
He played baseball and basketball at Santa Margarita Catholic High School before enrolling at USF.
Also, UC Riverside sophomore pitcher Angel Landazuri will not return to play for the Knights, as was expected. He will attend summer school instead. He was 4-0, 2.43 in 10 regular-season games in 2014, with 35 strikeouts in 48 innings, and was second-team all-WCL.
The Knights begin the 2015 season on June 3 with a home nonconference game against the Portland SeaDogs. Their WCL opener is June 5 at Bend; their WCL home opener is June 9 against Bellingham.
