Chiefs Battle to the End But Fall Short in Triple Overtime

Spokane Chiefs News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs were eliminated from the WHL Playoffs on Tuesday night, losing the game, 2-1 in triple overtime and the series, four games to two. Spokane rookie and Western Conference Rookie of the Year nominee Kailer Yamamoto tied the game with just five seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
The Silvertips struck first as captain Kohl Bauml punched in his second goal of the playoffs on a rebound chance midway through the first period. The goal, which came on the power play, was assisted by Edmonton Oilers prospect Ben Betker and veteran forward Carson Stadnyk.
It appeared the Chiefs would be shut out as both teams were scoreless until the final minute of regulation. Yamamoto deflected a shot from Spokane's leading scorer, Adam Helewka, under the pads of Everett goaltender Carter Hart, to send the Spokane Arena crowd into celebration.
No fewer than two full overtime periods later, with both teams clearly fatigued, Brayden Low took a loose puck from behind the Chiefs' net, across goaltender Garret Hughson, and into the net for the series-winning goal. The unassisted goal was Low's fourth of the series.
Spokane finished the game 0-for-1 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill. Hughson stopped 39 of 41 shots faced.
With the win, Everett advances to the second round of the WHL Playoffs and will face the defending Western Conference champion Portland Winterhawks.
