Comeback Bid Comes up Short as Beast Fall to Mavericks

April 7, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Brampton Beast News Release

Independence, MO - The Brampton Beast fought hard to mount a second period comeback, but couldn't find the goals they needed in the final frame as they ultimately fell by a score of 5-1 to the Missouri Mavericks. Matt McCready scored his third goal of the season, a rocket from the neutral zone, while Van Buskirk made 25 saves in his fourth consecutive start.

The game got off on a chippy note as Adam Chapman and Colten Hayes both dropped the gloves less than five minutes into the game for a spirited fight. Chris Owens put the home team on the board shortly afterwards with his second of the year, sparking another tilt on the ice this time between Jason Pitton and Tyler Currier. The remainder of the period was scoreless as both teams traded chances and the Beast blueline looking steady throughout.

The second period saw the Mavericks jump over the boards to increase their lead to 3-0 with goals from Ludwig Karlsson and Brett Stovin 98 seconds apart. Then, after a Brampton powerplay that saw the team frustrated by several saves from Mavericks netminder, Matt McCready fired a missile from outside the Missouri blueline to beat Mike Clemente and pull the Beast within two. Bobby Hughes picked up the assist for his 11 th point in his last 10 games as the dynamic centre continues to find the scoresheet.

It was as close as the Beast would come however, as despite several quality chances in the third period including a 5-on-4 powerplay early on they could not solve Clemente a second time. Karlsson added to the Mavericks lead with his second of the night while Andrew Courtney scored his team-leading 36 th of the season as the home team took home the victory in their final game at the Independence Events Center this season.

The Beast will have a perfect opportunity to even the score when they welcome the Mavericks to town this weekend for a back-to-back doubleheader beginning on April 10 for Picture Day at the Powerade Centre,. Fans are encouraged to bring their cameras and take pictures of and with their favourite Beast players after their game. April 11 is Cancer Awareness Day, where the Beast will be hosting their Stick it to Cancer walk before the game, which precedes a barbeque and other fun activities for fans including painting the ice after the match.

April 12 the Wheeling Nailers stop by for the final game of the season and Jersey Off Our Backs Day, where Beast players will be giving their jerseys to winning fans in attendance following the game. Sunday will also be the Beast's last team skate of the year, where fans have the chance to lace up and hit the ice with the Beast after their game.
