Mallards Edge Rush in Shootout, Close in on Playoff Berth

RAPID CITY, S.D.- Nick Grasso scored in regulation and provided the clinching shootout goal and Evan Mosher 32 saves as t he Quad City Mallards (35-28-7) defeated the host Rapid City Rush (37-26-6) 2-1 in the shootout Friday night. With the win, the third place Mallards reduced their magic number for clinching a playoff spot to two- any combination of standings points earned by the Mallards or available points the Wichita Thunder- the fifth place club in the ECHL's Central Division- fail to collect totaling two will lock up a postseason berth for the Mallards.

Grasso delivered the third Mallard shootout goal after Mario Lamoureux and Kevin Baker also converted; only Cody Ferrierio scored in the shootout for Rapid City.

Grasso had first struck by pouncing on a rebound to give the Mallards a 1-0 lead at 16:13 of the first period.

The Rush's Kale Kerbashian tied the game at one from the high slot with just 1:31 left in the second period.

Mosher stopped 16 third period Rapid City shots to send the game to overtime and, as it proved, the shootout.

The Mallards will bid to guarantee themselves playoff hockey when they meet the Rush again tomorrow night in Rapid City. The Mallards return home for their regular season finale against the Tulsa Oilers next Saturday night, April 11 at 7:05 p.m. Next Saturday will also be Fan Appreciation Night at the iWireless Center.
