Hawks Add Defenseman for 15/16 Season

April 3, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-Defenseman Mikey Anderson and the Waterloo Black Hawks have agreed to a tender pact which will see the University of Minnesota-Duluth prospect make his way to the Cedar Valley next fall, the Hawks announced Friday.

"We look forward to Mikey joining our organization to continue his development," said Black Hawks head coach P.K. O'Handley. "He will be coming to Waterloo with quite a bit of experience for a young man of his age, and with a bright future ahead of him."

Anderson will turn 16 later this spring, but has already played two years of varsity hockey at Hill-Murray School in Maplewood, Minnesota. As a freshman this season, he helped the Pioneers qualify for the Minnesota AA State Tournament, appearing in 30 games with eight goals and seven assists. As an eighth grader in the winter of 2013/14, Anderson was on the Hill-Murray varsity lineup card 28 times with two goals and five assists. He committed to UMD in March of 2014.

Like Anderson, recent Waterloo alumni Tyler Zepeda and Dan Sova honed their skills and skates at Hill-Murray before becoming Black Hawks. The school has won three Minnesota state championships and qualified for the state tournament 27 times.

Two weeks ago, Anderson was a participant at the U.S. National Team Development Program's Evaluation Camp in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Hawks saw Anderson's older brother, Joey, skating as a member of the NTDP Under-17's during a road matchup against Team USA last month. Joey Anderson is also committed to Minnesota-Duluth, and the Anderson brothers will likely skate together as Bulldogs, as they did with the Pioneers in 2013/14. Current Waterloo forward Nick Swaney is also a UMD recruit.

This is the second consecutive year in which a player has been offered and accepted a Waterloo Black Hawks tender. Defenseman Sam Rossini was signed in a similar manner last spring. Under league rules, the Hawks will now forego one of their selections during Phase I of the 2015 United States Hockey League Draft.

The Black Hawks wrap up the 2014/15 regular season over the next two weekends with four home games. For specific details and tickets, visit waterlooblackhawks.com.
