SOUTH BEND, Indiana (April 1, 2015) - Fans of the South Bend Cubs are encouraged to join team officials on Monday, April 6 at the South Bend International Airport as they greet the team who arrive on a 5:38 pm flight following spring training in Mesa, Arizona.
"We want our new team to see what a great community of fans we have here," said Joe Hart, President of the South Bend Cubs. "These players are part of a much-loved baseball dynasty- they are part of the Chicago Cubs. This is a big deal to them- and to South Bend. Once the players are off the plane, we'll officially welcome them to town before we take them to the stadium."
Hart said the team will be driven downtown in limousines to Four Winds Field via police escort.
This will be the first local look at the roster for fans and media alike. South Bend Cubs Field Manager Jimmy Gonzalez will be on the flight with his team. Gonzalez is set to begin his second season as a manager in the Chicago Cubs organization. The 41-year-old made his managerial debut last season in Mesa, Arizona for the Chicago Cubs Rookie League team after serving as hitting coach with the club in 2013. A former catcher, he played 14 minor league seasons after the Houston Astros selected him in the first round of the 1991 Draft. He was named Field Manager for the South Bend Cubs in December 2014. Gonzales will be available to the media on Monday night at the airport.
The team's arrival means that it's nearly time for Opening Day, the highly anticipated first game of the 2015 season where the South Bend Cubs finally take the field. The South Bend Cubs will play the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Thursday, April 9. Game time is 7:05 pm; gates open at 5 pm for a pre-game concert.
Hart will be joined by Swoop and other team officials. On Monday, fans are asked to gather in the main terminal and wear South Bend Cubs t-shirts and hats. Welcome signs are also encouraged.
