April 1, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Oshawa Generals News Release
After being down 2-0 in the series, the Peterborough Petes and Matthew Mancina were hungry for a win at home tonight, and they did just that. Despite outshooting their opponents 47-24, the Gens could not beat Mancina and the Petes walked away with a 3-1 win. With their first loss of the round, the Gens will play host to the Petes for game five this Friday, Apr. 3 at 7:35p.m.
The Petes were off to a quick start as they gained some momentum with an early power play. Just 45 seconds in, Michael McCarron received a four minute major for high sticking, which the Generals were able to kill off. The tone of the game increased as things started to get physical between the two teams, including a huge open ice hit on Cole Cassels. The Petes were sent to the penalty kill for the second time as Tobias Lindberg sat for tripping. With just 30 seconds left on the penalty kill, Mitch Vande Sompel made a huge block on the Petes shot to keep things scoreless. With 11:21 left in the first, and six minutes of penalty killing, the Petes eventually beat Appleby as Greg Betzold scored his first of the playoffs. Cassels created a huge scoring opportunity with a perfect pass to Hunter Smith but Mancina didn't let anything by. With less than four minutes to go in the opening period, Bradley Latour and Josh Maguire got into it and each received two minutes for roughing, resulting in four on four. With less than three minutes to go, Dakota Mermis and Chris Carlisle set up Cassels who netted his first of the playoffs.
The Gens came out strong on the first play of the second with a shot on Mancina within seconds. Moments later Kyle Jenkins of the Petes snuck one past Appleby just 1:16 into the period to give the Petes a 2-1 lead. At 14:40 the Oshawa Generals were doubling the Petes shots on goal with 21-9. The Generals first power play of the game finally came as Artem Vladimirov was called for hooking. With no opportunities on the man advantage, Josh Brown took his turn in the box for delay of game moments after the Petes came back full strength. The Generals continued to outshoot the Petes but could not reach the netting past Mancina. Offsetting minors to both Aidan Wallace and Logan DeNoble for roughing resulted in the second four on four of the night. With just five seconds left in the second, Smith received a high sticking penalty leaving the Generals trailing the Petes 2-1 after 40 minutes.
The Generals started off the third period on the penalty kill, which was cut short by Greg Betzold who received two minutes for tripping just 1:06 into the third. The Betzold penalty created some four on four hockey for 50 seconds, and a Generals power play for one minute. Less than two minutes later, Matt Mistele was given two minutes for cross checking, which sent the Gens to their seventh penalty of the night. After a solid penalty kill, the next 15 minutes of play were fairly quiet compared to the first and second. Appleby made two big saves shutting down both Betzold and MacDonald. With Appleby to the bench and an extra man on the ice, the Generals took a time out with 52 seconds left. Just moments later, a great effort from Michael Clarke resulted in an empty net goal and a 3-1 win for the Petes after 60.
Game four will take place this Thursday, Apr. 2 at the Peterborough Memorial Centre at 7:05p.m. The Generals will get a chance to redeem themselves Thursday and again on Friday, Apr. 3 in front of their home crowd. Tickets can be purchased by clicking here, visiting the GM Centre Box Office, or by calling 1-877-436-8811.
