WALDORF, MD - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs have announced that OF Cyle Hankerd, INF Casey Frawley and LHP Barrett Phillips have been signed for the 2015 season.
A Covina, CA native, Hankerd is a former two-time MLB Draft pick, having most recently been selected in the 3rd round by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2006. The University of Southern California product played at five different levels, making it as high as Triple-A in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. The 30 year-old Hankerd played for both Southern Maryland and Yucatan last season hitting .284 with 10 homers and 51 RBI combined between the two clubs. Hankerd was also an All-Star in the Atlantic League in 2013, batting .322 with 22 home runs, and 61 RBI in 81 games played.
Frawley, 27, was a member of the Atlantic League Champion Lancaster Barnstormers last season playing in 76 games. The New Haven, CT product was drafted in 2009 by the Cleveland Indians in the 17th round out of Stetson University. Frawley played for four season in the Indians organization and one season in the Rockies organization, making it to High-A Modesto in 2012.
Barrett Phillips was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of Spartanburg Methodist Junior College in 2010 and spent one season in the Pirates organization. The left-hander last pitched in 2012 for Winnipeg in the American Association, pitching 7.2 innings with an ERA of 3.52 in 11 games pitched out of the bullpen.
"I'm really pleased that we had the opportunity to add two position players, and another pitcher," said Blue Crabs Manager Stan Cliburn. "Cyle is a seasoned professional, having made it all the way to the Triple-A level to go along with his previous experience in the Atlantic League. Frawley can play multiple positions in the infield and adding a lefty in Phillips gives us more depth in our bullpen."
