The Week That Was...

The South Carolina Stingrays opened a season-long seven-game road trip with a four-game in five-night stretch through the Midwest and pushed their record-setting winning streak to 23 games with contests against the Cincinnati Cyclones, Toledo Walleye, Indy Fuel and Evansville IceMen for a week record of 3-1-0-0 and improved their overall record to 42-19-1-6.

After taking down the Cyclones in the shootout the previous Saturday at the North Charleston Coliseum, the two sides transferred to U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio Wednesday evening with the Stingrays prevailing again in the breakaway contest 4-3. With the Cyclones up 3-1 in the third period, Stingrays forward Derek DeBlois slipped past the defense for a shorthanded breakaway goal and forward Rob Bellamy netted the game-tying marker with 1:10 to play. Both sides scored twice in the five-round shootout to force sudden death where forward Patrick Gaul sealed the victory for the Stingrays in the eighth round. With the win, goaltender Jeff Jakaitis set a new ECHL record with his 14th consecutive victory and the Stingrays clinched a berth in the 2015 Kelly Cup Playoffs.

The Stingrays rolled into Toledo, Ohio and the Huntington Center Friday night for a date with the Walleye and erased 2-0 and 3-2 deficits for a 5-3 comeback win over the top team in the North Division. DeBlois led the Stingrays with two goals and an assist including the game-tying marker. The win marked the Stingrays' 23rd consecutive victory, tying the ECHL record for most consecutive wins without a regulation loss set by the Texas Wildcatters (18-0-5) in 2007-08.

The longest winning streak in ECHL history and second longest in North American professional hockey came to a close Saturday evening at the Indiana Farms Coliseum in Indianapolis with a 3-2 setback to the Indy Fuel. Defenseman Jason Binkley scored his first professional goal late in the first period and team captain Andrew Rowe buried his 100th professional goal in the middle frame. Goaltender Keegan Asmundson made his professional debut and registered 20 saves in the loss. The loss was the Stingrays' first since January 30 at Orlando.

A busy and frigid week came to a close Sunday night with a meeting against the Evansville IceMen at Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana. Forward Wayne Simpson acquired four assists and Asmundson earned his first pro win and shutout making 21 saves in a 4-0 win.

The Stingrays boast the best defense in the ECHL with a 2.31 goals-against average and the best shots shots-against average at 26.01.

Goaltenders Adam Morrison and Jeff Jakaitis hold the best goals-against averages in the ECHL with Morrison standing on top of the ECHL with a 1.88 GAA. Jakaitis sits second in the league with a 2.02 GAA. Morrison is also second among league netminders with a .928 save percentage and tied for second with four shutouts. Jakaitis is third with a .922 save percentage and leads the ECHL with six shutouts. Morrison is riding a seven-game winning streak while Jakaitis is on an ECHL-record 15 game winning streak. Jakaitis also stands second with four shootout wins.

Forward Derek DeBlois is tied for 14th among ECHL rookies with 41 points (18 goals, 23 assists).

Defenseman Marcus Perrier is first among ECHL rookies with 42 minor penalties and fifth with 11 major penalties. He also stands fourth among first-year players with 149 penalty minutes.

Forward Caleb Herbert boasts a shooting percentage of 20.9 (19 goals on 91 shots), ranking fourth over ECHL rookies.

Team captain Andrew Rowe is riding an 11-game point streak with five goals and 14 assists for 19 points.
