Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, MO (March 29, 2015)- The Missouri Mavericks fell short of a weekend sweep on Sunday night in a 4-3 shootout loss at the hands of the visiting Quad City Mallards. The Mavs held a close battle with the Mallards through sixty-five minutes of hockey at Independence Events Center, sending the tied-up game to a shootout decision where Mario Lamoureux bested net-minder Mike Clemente for the extra point.

Rookie defenseman Chris Owens' opened the scoreboard for the Missouri Mavericks midway through the first period at 10:55, notching his first professional goal, assisted by teammates Lindsay Sparks and Andrew Courtney. Owens was acquired by the Mavericks ahead of the 2015 ECHL Trade Deadline from the Ontario Reign, the twenty-five year old St. John's, NFLD native spent the last five seasons at Acadia University (AUS).

The Mavs maintained their 1-0 lead through the remainder of the first period and majority of the second frame until the Mallards were able to capitalize on a power-play opportunity and tie the game 1-1 at 16:30 via left winger Jeff Lee. Austin Caldwell was credited with the lone assist on Lee's twelfth goal of the season.

Quad City expanded their lead 2-1 with another power-play tally only 2:10 into the third period when Kevin Baker took a feed from Matt Neal and Jake Baker. Missouri responded with a lamp-lighter from Sparks just over a minute later at 3:16 of the frame. Sebastien Thinel and defenseman Alex Lepkowski took the helpers on Sparks' tying goal.

Right wing Tyler Currier extended his goal streak (three goals in three games) at 5:32 on a Mavericks man-advantage to take the lead for Missouri, 3-2. Jared Brown and Owens assisted on the power-play goal.

Then Kevin Baker notched his second power-play goal of the contest at 14:24 to once again tie up the game. Mario Lamoureux and Joe Perry assisted.

Knotted up at 3-3 after sixty minutes of play, the Mavericks and the Mallards battled in five minutes overtime with still no winning goal. Mario Lamoureux scored the only tally of the shootout in the first round for Quad City, clinching the victory for the visiting team.

The Mavericks boast a five-point weekend after tonight's shootout loss, having bested the Allen Americans 5-4 in an overtime decision on Friday night in Allen, TX and a 5-2 win over the Wichita Thunder Saturday evening at Independence Events Center.
