FC Dallas News Release
FRISCO, Texas - FC Dallas (3-0-1, 10 points) was forced to play down a man for 73 minutes of the match, but still managed to keep the visiting Seattle Sounders FC (1-1-1, 4 points) off the scoreboard in a gritty, 0-0, draw in front of 18,333 fans tonight at Toyota Stadium.
FC Dallas held a slight edge in possession through the first 15 minutes of the match but left back Kellyn Acosta's 2015 debut would be cut short at the 17-minute mark when the defender came together with Seattle's Andy Rose near midfield. Referee Kevin Stott allowed Sounders FC's counterattack to continue and the play required a diving header from Zach Loyd to cut out a dangerous cross, but Dallas would play the remainder of the match with 10 men as Acosta's challenge earned the youngster a straight red card.
Dallas was still dangerous despite the adversity. Fabian Castillo cut through four defenders at the top of the box in the 28th minute and was taken to the ground, earning a good look for Michel, 20 yards from goal. The Brazilian fired an almost-perfect free kick but it wasn't to be as the ball cracked off the top of the crossbar and bounced out of play.
FC Dallas ended the first half with a 2-0 advantage in shots and just a 49-51 deficit in time of possession.
Seattle had a prime opportunity to go ahead just miss the right post behind Chris Seitz in the 54th minute. Leo Gonzalez set up the chance with a perfect cross that was played in from the left flank towards Chad Barrett. The forward had a step on his defender at the far post but a timely bump from Ryan Hollingshead put his attempt on goal off the mark.
Seconds later, Victor Ulloa freed Castillo to run at three defenders at the opposite end of the field. Under heavy duress, Ulloa cleared the ball in the direction of Castillo. The Colombian not only won the ball, but dribbled at goal and got off a right-footed attempt that zipped past the right post, nearly giving Dallas the lead.
Seattle came close to breaking the hearts of the near-capacity crowd in the 80th minute. Victor Mansaray broke free down the left side of the area and slipped a short pass into the goalmouth. Sounders FC's Rose looked certain to score the winner but a late slide-tackle from Loyd kept the match tied, 0-0, at the final whistle.
The clean sheet was FC Dallas' third of the season, and for Seitz, it is his career-best third shutout of the year, already in March.
