BAIE-COMEAU - Simon Desbiens scored the eventual winning goal late in the second period as the Baie-Comeau Drakkar defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs, 4-1, in Game 2 of their first-round Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoff series Saturday at Centre Henry-Leonard.

Nicolas Meloche, Maxime St-Cyr and Anthony Beauchamp also tallied for Baie-Comeau, which holds a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Nathan Noel responded for Saint John.

The Sea Dogs earned four power plays in the first period, including a 5-on-3 opportunity for 53 seconds, but the club could not penetrate Drakkar goalie Philippe Cadorette.

Luke Green, who scored Saint John's lone goal in Game 1, had an open chance from the right wing faceoff dot. The blueliner wristed a low shot through the legs of Cadorette that hit the right post. The goal light went on. A review by replay officials determined the puck had not entered the net.

Baie-Comeau had two opportunities on the man advantage, but also failed to strike.

The game stayed scoreless after one frame.

Early in the second period, Saint John goalie Sebastien Auger made a pad save off a quick shot from St-Cyr. The rebound went to the slot, where Matthieu Desautels hammered a one-timer that Auger snared with his glove.

About four minutes after that, the Sea Dogs created an odd-man rush. Defenceman Adam Bateman took a pass as the trailer and blasted a slap shot that Cadorette swallowed up in his midsection.

The Drakkar opened the scoring on a power play eight minutes into the middle period when Meloche rifled a shot from the centre of the blueline that deflected off of Braydon Blight's stick and over Auger's catching glove.

Baie-Comeau doubled its lead with five minutes left in the period.

Vaclav Karabacek fed a pass from the right corner to a wide-open Desbiens in the slot. The 19-year-old whistled a wrist shot past Auger's glove.

The Drakkar led 2-0 after two periods.

Five minutes into the third period, Saint John nearly buried a shorthanded chance.

Matthew Highmore chased down a loose puck in the left corner and tapped a blind pass to the front of the net for Spencer Smallman. The third-year winger tried to outwait the goalie, moving to his right before sliding a low shot toward the left post. Cadorette sprawled, face down, and made a save with his left foot.

The Drakkar expanded their lead just as their power play ended.

Karabacek found St-Cyr in the left circle. The league's leading goal scorer in the regular season snapped a wrist shot through Auger's legs to make it a 3-0 game.

Saint John's only goal came about ninety seconds later on a Sea Dog power play.

Jason Bell kept the puck in at the right point and fired a pass to the top of the left circle for Noel. The second-year pivot crushed a slap shot that went through Cadorette's legs.

Saint John pulled Auger with under two minutes left, creating a brief 6-on-4 advantage, but the Sea Dogs could not close the remaining gap on the scoreboard.

Beauchamp wrapped up the scoring with an empty-net goal with 2.2 seconds remaining.

Desbiens' winning goal made him first star while Meloche earned second star with his second goal in as many games. Karabacek took third star with three assists in front of 2,221 fans in attendance.

Game 3 of the series is Tuesday, March 31st, at 7 p.m. at Harbour Station. Tickets are available at the Harbour Station Box Office, online at harbourstation.ca or by calling 657-1234. Tickets for Game 4 on Thursday, April 2nd, at 7 p.m. are also on sale.
