Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - First period mistakes doomed the Binghamton Senators tonight as they fell 3-1 to the visiting Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The Penguins managed two goals in the opening 20 minutes of play while goaltender Matt Murray carried a shutout deep into the third period to defeat the B-Sens in their eighth and final meeting of the season.
Scott Wilson opened the scoring 3:13 into the opening frame after he sent a wrist shot towards the Binghamton net and deflected off a defender past Scott Greenham to make it 1-0. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton doubled their lead just seconds following a hooking call on Danny Syvret as Jason Megna completed a shorthanded breakaway off the faceoff to give the visitors a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Following a scoreless second period, Carter Rowney batted home a rebound off of a shot from Taylor Chorney for his eighth goal of the season to give the Penguins a 3-0 lead. Max McCormick broke up Murray's bid for his 11th shutout of the year when he redirected a shot from Fredrik Claesson into the back of the net with less than five minutes to play in regulation. Despite a flurry of scoring chances over the final few minutes of play, Murray and the Penguins' defense held on for the 3-1 lead.
Murray finished with 25 saves on 26 shots faced to improve to 22-8-3 on the year while Greenham stopped 24 shots in the losing effort.
Binghamton is back on home ice tomorrow when they host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 7:05p.m. Tickets are available by calling the Binghamton Senators Executive Office at (607) 722-7367 8:00a.m. through the second intermission.
