Aces Sign Rookie Free Agent Forward Tanner Sorenson
March 27, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Alaska Aces, three time Kelly Cup champions, have signed rookie free agent center Tanner Sorenson, it was announced by Aces head coach Rob Murray.
Sorenson, 22, will be available for game action this weekend during a three game series against the Stockton Thunder, beginning tonight at 6:30 p.m. (KFQD/ECHL.TV) at Stockton Arena. Sorenson will wear #10.
"Tanner is a forward equipped with high-end skill and full of potential, coming from a distinguished program like Michigan State where we've found players who can make an immediate impact at our level," said Murray. "It's a terrific incentive for him to produce for his hometown team and we're excited to see his results, which will ultimately come with effort."
Sorenson, a native of Anchorage, skated with Michigan State University (NCAA) for four seasons and earned 35 points (18g-17a) in 104 career games. He posted career-highs in goals (13), assists (8) and points (21) as a 2012-13 sophomore, ranking second on the Spartans in goals and tied for second in scoring.
The 5-foot-9, 179 pound pivot previously competed for two seasons at Shattuck St. Mary's High School, the alma mater of National Hockey League forwards Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews and Zach Parise. He racked up 140 points (70g-70a) and 118 penalty minutes in 109 career games with the Sabres and tied the program's lead with 41 goals as captain in 2010-11, en route to a Under-18 Tier I National Championship.
Sorenson's ties to Anchorage include eight years of skating for the Alaska All-Stars. His father, Dennis, participated in the founding of the Anchorage Aces in 1989 and was an All-American forward at University of Alaska-Anchorage (NCAA), currently ranking second on the program's all-time scoring list.
Sorenson is the third member of Michigan State's program to join the Aces this season, along with forwards Greg Wolfe and Dean Chelios.
The Aces are the official ECHL affiliate of the St. Louis Blues and Minnesota Wild of the NHL. Season ticket and sponsorship packages are currently available through the Aces office at 15th & Gambell.
