DULUTH, Ga. - Tonight, the Gladiators (17-41-3-3) kick off their final three-game home weekend of the season with another matchup against the Orlando Solar Bears (34-23-4-3). Of the five remaining home games, including tonight, the Gladiators will take on the Solar Bears twice, the Greenville Road Warriors twice, and the Evansville IceMen once.
Gwinnett can go a long way towards influencing the outcome of the playoffs. The Solar Bears currently sit in the final playoff spot in the East Division, fourth place with 75 points. The Road Warriors are just three points back of Orlando, with five games to play against the Gladiators through the end of the season.
Glads Notes:
Smart Guys: Of the 25 players on the Gladiators' roster, 19 have attended college at some point in their careers - and 12 within the last year. Included in that total are Zach Sarig, who attended Division-III Plymouth State and Patrick McEachen, who attended Queens University in the CIS. Coach Andy Brandt is also known for his time at the University of Wisconsin, where he won an NCAA Championship in 2006.
College Party: The Gladiators are well represented amongst the NCAA hockey teams competing in this year's tournament. Goaltenders Mike Lee (St. Cloud State) and Kent Patterson (Minnesota), forward Geoff Paukovich (Denver), and defenseman Patrick MacGregor (Boston University) all have their alma maters competing for the trophy.
Gladiators Ahoy: Three players currently on the Gladiators roster have been assigned from their AHL affiliate, the Portland Pirates - Dan O'Donoghue, Greg Carey, and Mike Lee - and eight more - Joel Hanley (POR), Louis Domingue (POR), Jordon Southorn (POR), James Melindy (POR), Dyson Stevenson (POR/BRI), Bretton Stamler (HFD), Casey Pierro-Zabotel (NOR), and Joe Stejskal (IAW) - have spent time in the AHL this year.
Milestones: Geoff Paukovich is one goal away from his 50th as a pro and one game from his 450th professional match ... Scott Arnold is five games from his 150th professional contest ... Tyler Shiplo, Daniel Bahntge, and Justin Buzzeo will all make their professional debuts this weekend.
Streaks: Rookie Greg Carey two goals and an assist in his last three games ... Forward Brock Higgs has an assist in every game he's played with Gwinnett so far - three.
