DeAngelo Named OHL March Defenceman of the Month

Toronto, ON - The Ontario Hockey League today announced the Top OHL Performers of the Month for regular season games played in March 2015, including Kingston Frontenacs forward Sam Bennett, Soo Greyhounds defenceman Anthony DeAngelo, Erie Otters rookie Alex DeBrincat, and Kingston Frontenacs goaltender Lucas Peressini.

OHL Defenceman of the Month - Anthony DeAngelo (Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds):

For the second straight month, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds blueliner Anthony DeAngelo is the OHL Defenceman of the Month. The Tampa Bay Lightning prospect follows up a 19-point (5-14--19) month of February with another solid effort, scoring seven goals, 10 assists and 17 points in just seven contests in the month of March. The native of Sewell, New Jersey is in the midst of a 25-game point streak that dates back to January 10, a span in which he has collected 15 goals, 36 assists and 51 points. DeAngelo started the month of March with back-to-back two-goal performances. He posted a season-high five points in an 8-3 win over London on March 1 before scoring two goals and two assists in a 6-4 win in Windsor on March 5. He entered the month of March on a hot streak, having been the Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 1.

DeAngelo led all OHL defencemen in scoring this season with 25 goals, 64 assists and 89 points in 55 games between Sarnia and Sault Ste. Marie, with 30 of his 89 points coming on the man advantage. The Tampa Bay Lightning's first round (19th overall) pick in the 2014 NHL Draft also represented the United States in the 2015 World Junior Championship in Toronto and Montreal. DeAngelo's 89 points are the most by an OHL blueliner since Windsor Spitfires rearguard Ryan Ellis put up 101 (24-77--101) during the 2010-11 season. As a result of his outstanding season, DeAngelo has been named one of six OHL Defenceman of the Year finalists.

OHL Player of the Month - Sam Bennett (Kingston Frontenacs):

Calgary Flames prospect Sam Bennett of the Kingston Frontenacs is the OHL Player of the Month for March after he tallied 10 goals, 10 assists and 20 points in eight games. Bennett led the Frontenacs to victory in each of his eight March appearances, stringing together a six-game goal scoring streak from March 4 to 14, one that saw him record two goals on two separate occasions along with a hat-trick in a 6-0 win over North Bay. Bennett earned first star honours three times in the month of March to help the Frontenacs lock down the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference with a final record of 32-28-5-3. He was the Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 15 after he the league with 10 points (6-4--10) in three games.

Calgary's first round (fourth overall) pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, Sam Bennett has collected 11 goals, 13 assists and 24 points in 11 games during an injury-shortened season. The Holland Landing, ON, native heads into the OHL Playoffs for the third time in his career as his Kingston Frontenacs begin a first round series against the North Bay Battalion on Friday.

OHL Rookie of the Month - Alex DeBrincat (Erie Otters):

Erie Otters winger Alex DeBrincat is the OHL Rookie of the Month for the third time this season. DeBrincat's big month of March included points in all nine of the games he played, racking up a total of 11 goals, 13 assists and 24 points with a plus/minus rating of plus-18. The 17 year-old native of Farmington Hills, MI, had goals in seven contests and received star of the game recognition on six different occasions. DeBrincat closed out the year registering a career-high six points in an 8-7 win in Niagara on March 22, scoring while adding five assists. He was the Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 8 after he registered nine points (3-6--9) in three games.

DeBrincat becomes the first Otters rookie to ever accrue 100 points and score 50 goals in a season. He becomes the first 17-year-old OHL rookie to reach the century mark and score 50 goals since Plymouth's David Legwand did so during the 1997-98 season. The 5'7", 160Ib forward finishes the year with 51 goals, 53 assists and 104 points with a plus/minus rating of plus-59 and is an OHL Rookie of the Year finalist.

Vaughn OHL Goaltender of the Month - Lucas Peressini (Kingston Frontenacs):

Lucas Peressini of the Kingston Frontenacs is the Vaughn OHL Goaltender of the Month for March. The Nobleton, ON, native played to a 7-0-0-0 record supported by a 1.83 goals against-average and a .929 save percentage with one shutout. Peressini made 26 saves to blank the North Bay Battalion in a 6-0 victory on March 14, recording his fifth shutout of the season to set a new Frontenacs single-season franchise record. The 20 year-old goaltender faced a heavy workload against the Eastern Conference leading Oshawa Generals on March 20, making 34 saves in a 2-1 victory to earn first star honours. Peressini collected his 30th win of the season on March 21, making 26 saves in a 4-2 win over the Barrie Colts.

After a remarkable finish to the season, Peressini set new Kingston Frontenacs single-season franchise records for goals against-average (2.32) as well as save percentage (.922) to go with a 30-20-3-3 record. The 6'2", 188Ib netminder is a finalist for OHL Goaltender of the Year and helped Kingston record the fourth-lowest goals against total in the OHL this season, as they surrendered just 197 on the year. His 2.32 goals against-average was second in the league behind Oshawa's Ken Appleby.
