The Joplin Blasters have added their second former Major League Pitcher to the Inaugural 2015 roster. RHP Winston Abreu agreed to terms and looks to bring stability to the backend of the Blaster's bullpen.
Abreu has spent time with 4 MLB Organizations, the Baltimore Orioles, Washington Nationals, Tampa Bay Rays, and Cleveland Indians. His best MLB season came in 2007 with the Washington Nationals where in 30.1 innings pitched he amassed an impressive 26/9 K/BB ratio while primarily being utilized out of the bullpen. He spent the 2014 season with Bridgeport of the Atlantic league where he pitched 52 innings, striking out 54 batters and collecting 17 saves for the Bluefish.
"We are thrilled to bring a player of Winston's caliber to Joplin," said Blasters GM Shawn Suarez. "He continues our trend of adding strong arms to the roster, and is a weapon for Carlos to utilize at the end of games."
He began his career in 1997 with the Atlanta Braves. During his career he has been extremely well traveled making numerous stops in minor league baseball, as well as, the Mexican League, Japan, and many more.
Abreu joins fellow former Big Leaguer Robinson Tejeda to form the foundation of a strong pitching staff, as the Blasters look to compete in the highly competitive Southern Division of the American Association.
The Blasters are the newest member of the South Division in the American Association of Independent Baseball. They will play a 50 home game schedule beginning in May of 2015 at a renovated Joe Becker Stadium, and will be a major entertainment destination for the Four States Community.
