Axemen win first game of season

Bemidji, Minn. (Sanford Center) - The Bemidji Axemen won their first game of the season in a back and forth overtime battle against the Billings Wolves. Quarterback Terrance Owens returned from an injury to lead Bemidji by going 16-30 for 130 passing yards and three touchdown passes.

Billings started off the game with two touchdowns coming from a 28-yard run by D.A. Allen and a 14-yard pass from Britt Darakatalib to Allen to put the Wolves up 12-0. The Axemen scoring drought was ended in the second quarter when Terrance Owens found Josh Jarboe for a 15-yard touchdown pass. The Wolves then went on to score on 24-yard pass from Darakatalib to Jamel Johnson and a safety right before halftime to put Billings up 20-13.

Mulku Kalokoh brought the starting kick off of the second half 51 yards to tie the game at 20. Billings followed with a 19-yard pass from Darakatalib to James Walton. Wolves' kicker Michael Georgetti kicked a 24-yard field goal with 58 seconds left in the game to put the Wolves up 44-37. The Axemen answered back with strong drive that ended up seeing Kalokoh run in from 2 yards to set up Zach Pulkinen to tie the game with the following extra point.

New cornerback Tony Grimes intercepted Darakatalib in the endzone on the first play of overtime to give the ball back to the Axemen. The Axemen offense then went on to set up former Bemidji State kicker Zach Pulkinen to kick a 33-yard gaming winning field goal. This was the first overtime game in Axemen history.

Mulku Kalokoh led Bemidji in rushing with 81 yards along with 152 all-purpose yards and three total touchdowns. Ryan Balentine led Bemidji in receiving yards with 57 and Josh Jarboe scored two receiving touchdowns. Billings was led by Britt Darakatalib who went 12-26 for 134 passing yards and four touchdowns. Darakatalib also led the Wolves in rushing with 27 yards. D.A. Allen was the team leader with 51 receiving yards and James Walton scored two receiving touchdowns.

The Axemen (1-2) travel to Green Bay next Sunday to take on the Blizzard at 4:00 p.m.
