JACKSONVILLE, FL - FC Edmonton's first 90 minute match of the 2015 preseason schedule resulted in a convincing 6-0 victory over National Professional Soccer League's (NPSL) Jacksonville United FC on Saturday, March 21. With goals scored by six different players, it was a very positive performance from the Eddies.
"There were some excellent performances and the level of fitness was very pleasing," said FC Edmonton's head coach Colin Miller. "There were some really good goals. It was nice to see Oskar (Hauksson), Daryl (Fordyce), Frank (Jonke) and Tomi (Ameobi) all score tonight in addition to two good performances by FCE Academy player's Thomas (Shores) and Shamit (Shome)."
The Eddies started off the first half with the majority of possession, but were unable to find the back of the net on any of the team's early chances. It was in the 35th minute when midfielder Lance Laing skipped out of a challenge to send in the ball across the face of goal and find the waiting foot of new signing Oskar Hauksson. Hauksson redirected the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0 for FC Edmonton. Ten minutes later, Hauksson connected with striker Tomi Ameobi who pulled the opposing 'keeper off his line and slotted the ball into the net to make it 2-0.
After the restart, it took another seven minutes for second-half substitute Hanson Boakai to float a ball over the 18-yard box into the path of a diving Daryl Fordyce who sent it back across goal to Frank Jonke, who volleyed it into the net for a 3-0 FC Edmonton lead. Striker Sadi Jalali made it 4-0 with a curling and dipping shot from the top of the box and FCE Academy midfielder Thomas Shores made it 5-0 with a similar effort ten minutes later.
The final goal of the match came from Fordyce who had plenty of time to pick his spot in the net as he was left undefended at the top of the box. His goal made the final score 6-0 - a convincing victory for the Eddies, but the match is nothing to get carried away with, according to Miller.
"We know that we'll be in for a much tougher match on Wednesday night (against Tampa Bay Rowdies)," said Miller. "With all things considered and that we had no injuries, I'm very happy with where we're at, but it's back to work on Monday."
FC Edmonton play the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Wednesday, March 25 (5:30 p.m. EST) and then will play the Carolina RailHawks on Saturday, March 28 (3:00 p.m. EST).
FC Edmonton fans will be able to see the Eddies live on Sunday, April 12 (2:00 p.m. MT KO) at the Canadian Tire Home Opener at Clarke Field. Single tickets are now on sale at fcedmonton.com or by calling 780.700.2600.
