ORLANDO, Fla. - The Gladiators (17-39-3-2) hit the home stretch of the season tonight as they take on the Orlando Solar Bears (31-22-4-3) Thursday night at the Amway Center. Gwinnett has 11 games remaining in the 2014-15 season, and of those 11, ten are against either the Solar Bears (five) or the Greenville Road Warriors (five).
The last time that the Gladiators and the Solar Bears squared off was on February 28th, a 5-3 slugfest that saw two major brawls, six ejections, and nearly 150 PIM between the two sides. The last two wins that the Gladiators have under their belt came at the hands of the Solar Bears.
Glads Notes:
Continued Changes: Three new rookie skaters will be making their Gladiators debuts this week. Brock Higgs, a forward, was picked up off of waivers by Gwinnett on Saturday. On Tuesday, the Gladiators signed defenseman Zach Sarig, and on Wednesday they signed defenseman Kevin Albers. Of note, all three players attended four years of college (Higgs - RPI, Sarig - Plymouth State, Albers - Niagara), an intentional trend as Coach Brandt looks to rebuild the Gladiators roster with young collegiate talent.
Gladiators Ahoy: Four players currently on the Gladiators roster have been assigned from their AHL affiliate, the Portland Pirates - Dan O'Donoghue, Greg Carey, and Mike Lee - and eight more - Joel Hanley (POR), Louis Domingue (POR), Jordon Southorn (POR), James Melindy (POR), Dyson Stevenson (POR/BRI), Bretton Stamler (HFD), Casey Pierro-Zabotel (NOR), and Joe Stejskal (IAW) - have spent time in the AHL this year.
Milestones: Sean Berkstresser is one game from his 450th professional game ... Geoff Paukovich is one goal away from his 50th as a pro ... Zach Sarig and Kevin Albers will both be making their professional debuts tonight.
