Sting Fall Short against Hounds

SAULT STE. MARIE - Three power play goals sparked the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds to a 6-3 victory over the Sarnia Sting, Saturday night in front of 4,438 fans at the Essar Centre.

The teams were tied 1-1 after the opening period before the Greyhounds jumped out to a commanding 5-2 advantage after two periods.

Head Coach, Trevor Letowski comments on his team's effort, "I liked our first period. We outshot them 13-4 and that doesn't happen much in this rink. That was a bright spot, but our penalty kill let us down in the second period.

Letowski goes on to add, "They are a dangerous team. We had good chunks of minutes but we also had lapses. They scored three quick goals and broke the game open."

Sault Ste. Marie went three-for-five with the man advantage while Sarnia was one-for-five.

The Greyhounds possess the best home record in the league at 29-2-0-1.

Sarnia outshot the Greyhounds 13-4 in the opening 20 minutes with the teams trading goals.

Sault Ste. Marie scored the first goal at 7:32 when Colton White snapped home a quick shot into the top corner of the net.

But the Sting responded just 59 seconds later when Davis Brown poked home a loose puck off a Josh Chapman shot.

The Greyhounds put the game out of reach in the second period scoring four goals, three of them coming on the power play. Sergey Tolchinsky, Michael Bunting, Medric Mercier and Nick Ritchie scored the goals.

Nikita Korostelev scored the lone Sting goal in the second stanza, his team-high 23rd of the season. Pavel Zacha drew the lone assist as Sarnia was behind 5-2 after 40 minutes.

Sarnia cut the lead to 5-3 at 12:22 of period three on the power play when Brown slapped home a rebound from close range. Stephen Pierog and Kevin Spinozzi garnered assists.

But ex-Sting Bryan Moore put the game out of reach as he scored his 22nd of the year at 17:57 for Sault Ste. Marie.

Sarnia finished with a 31-30 edge in shots on goal. Brandon Halverson was the winning goalie. Justin Fazio started for Sarnia and was relieved after allowing five goals on 15 shots. Taylor Dupuis finished.

Sarnia's final regular season home game will be Friday night when they host the Windsor Spitfires beginning at 7:05 p.m. at the RBC Centre. It will be CHOK Radio Night. Fans are encouraged to bring their radios for a chance to win a number of prizes.

When the Sting meet Erie in the opening round, games one and two will be in Erie on Thursday, March 26th and Friday, March 27th. Games three and four will be at the RBC Centre on Sunday, March 29th and Tuesday, March 31st.
