Syracuse Crunch News Release

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Syracuse Crunch continued their three-in-three weekend with their second victory in as many days, besting the Albany Devils, 2-1, Saturday at Times Union Center. Crunch goaltender Allen York made 33 saves and was perfect for Syracuse until Albany spoiled the shutout with 3.6 seconds left. Jonathan Marchessault led the offense with his 12th multi-point game.

With five minutes remaining in the second period, Devils forward Joe Whitney was assessed a match penalty for cross checking Luke Witkowski in the face resulting in a five-minute Syracuse power play. Thirty seconds into the man advantage Joel Vermin tied up two Devils in the left corner and the puck squirted to Ryan Martindale at the left goal line. He deked in front and faked around Dacy Zajac with a pass to Jonathan Marchessault at the back door. Marchessault beat Albany goalie Scott Wedgewood to give the Crunch a 1-0 edge. Wedgewood had 21 saves in the loss and was the game's third star.

York, appearing in his fifth game for the Crunch this season, denied Albany a game-tying goal the rest of the way. He stunned the Devils repeatedly, including a right-toe save in the third. Carter Ashton extended Syracuse's lead to 2-0 with an empty-net goal with 17.6 seconds left. Jonathan Marchessault fed Ashton after stealing the puck from Mike Sislo in the right corner. Ashton has four points in two games after a three-point effort Friday.

Raman Hrabarenka scored the only goal for the Devils with 3.6 seconds left to break York's shutout. York still earned the game's first star. After picking up four shutouts for the Florida Everblades (ECHL) earlier this season, York narrowly missed his first AHL shutout since Feb. 22, 2014, when he stopped 39 shots in a Crunch win against Hershey. York has recorded three shutouts in his AHL career.

Marchessault's goal and assist give him 50 points for the season, his fourth 50-point season in four years in the AHL. He has 12 points in his last 10 contests. In seven games against the Devils this season, he leads Syracuse with 11 points (4g, 7a).

Martindale has four points since debuting with Syracuse March 6, all in the last two games. Joel Vermin's secondary assist was his 17th of the year for 26 points.

The Crunch's penalty kill was 7-for-7, the most kills the team has had in a game without surrendering a goal. Syracuse's previous best was six kills, accomplished three times: Dec. 19 vs. Hartford, Dec. 31 at Rochester and March 6 vs. Portland.

The Crunch have beaten the Devils in six of seven meetings and all but one contest was decided by one goal.

Syracuse completes its three-in-three weekend 3 p.m. Sunday in Bridgeport. Syracuse has one win and points in two of three games against the Sound Tigers.
