Today, the Potomac Nationals publicly invited comedic acting legend, Will Ferrell to Pfitzner Stadium anytime during the 2015 season to mirror his Spring Training Cactus League exploits of this afternoon by taking the field to play all nine positions during an upcoming P-Nats game in Woodbridge, VA to benefit Stand Up To Cancer and Cancer for College.

Ferrell, in conjunction with Home Box Office, Inc (HBO) and Major League Baseball (MLB) in addition to the aforementioned cancer-fighting charities is visiting Spring Training ballparks today to raise awareness for cancer through the conduit of a Funny or Die-produced HBO television special.

Ferrell's plan to play all nine positions on the diamond is a nod to a former baseball legend that also puts the spotlight on the fight versus cancer.

Ferrell's stunt is a tip of the cap to former MLB player, SS Bert Campaneris, who became the first MLB player to take the field at all nine positions on the diamond in one regular-season Major League contest for the Kansas City Athletics during a game in 1965. Since Campaneris pulled off the inaugural "every position" feat only IF/OF Cesar Tovar (Minnesota Twins, 1968), Utility IF Scott Sheldon (Texas Rangers, 2000), and Utility IF Shane Halter (Detroit Tigers, 2000) have joined this exclusive list.

In August of 2012, Carolina Mudcats Utility IF Justin Toole played a Carolina League matchup against the Salem Red Sox in which Toole as part of a "Toole Time" promotion by the Mudcats played all nine positions in a 4-2 Carolina victory.

Although Ferrell's nine-positions appearances may have an asterisk attached because it will be achieved over the course of five Spring Training games involving ten total teams, Ferrell's goal of raising awareness for the fight against cancer is shared by the Potomac Nationals Baseball Club which initiated the formal invite.

From the P-Nats' Facebook post today:

"P-NATS INVITE WILL FERRELL TO THE PFITZ TO PLAY ALL NINE POSITIONS IN 2015

On the same day comedic acting superstar, Will Ferrell makes his MLB Spring Training rounds, the Potomac Nationals invite him to Pfitzner Stadium anytime during the 2015 season to play all nine positions in an effort to support Stand Up To Cancer and Cancer for College.

We think a return of Billy Ray "Rojo" Johnson would look best in patriotic colors.

The fictional character (played by Ferrell), Billy Ray "Rojo" Johnson stormed out of the bullpen to pitch in a contest for the Round Rock Express (Triple-A, Texas Rangers) in 2010 and was ejected after throwing just one "brush-back" pitch.
