WUERFEL PARK - The Traverse City Beach Bums are excited to announce they've re-signed first baseman Yazy Arbelo. The power hitting left-hander led the 2014 club with 17 home runs and 61 RBI.
"We're excited to have Yazy come back and play first base for us again" said Beach Bums' manager Dan Rohn. "He'll hit third or fourth in our line- up. With his power potential he is a big cog in our line-up."
Arbelo will be in his second season with the Beach Bums and sixth overall in professional baseball. In 2014 he led the team in home runs and RBI while adding 17 doubles in 93 games. He provided one of the most memorable moments last season when he launched a two-run walk-off homer in the 10th inning of a 4-2 win on August 21st.
The 26-year old previously spent four seasons in the Arizona Diamondbacks' organization after being drafted in the 26th Round of the 2010 MLB Amateur Draft. He started his career playing for short-season A Yakima (WA) hitting .285 with 14 homers. In 2011 he elevated to low-A South Bend (IN) where he belted a career best 31 homers and 95 RBI. He participated in the Midwest League All-Star Game that season. In 2012, he again moved up, this time to High-A Visalia (CA), where he played in 55 games and then to AA Mobile (AL) for 64 games. In 2013, he started the season back with Visalia before moving onto the New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am League.
He was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the 43rd round of the 2006 draft but didn't sign. Instead, he went to play collegiately at Keystone College.
Yazy calls Port St. Lucie, FL home during the baseball off-season where he lives with his wife Emmy, and their two children Gyzela & Ayden.
The 10th season of Beach Bums baseball begins Friday May 15 at Evansville at 6:35pm. The home opener scheduled for Friday May 22nd vs. Windy City at 7:05pm.
All games will be broadcast live on 98.1 The Bear.
The Wuerfel Park offices are open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. The Beach Bums will play 51 games at Wuerfel Park in 2015 starting with the home opener and a FANtastic Fireworks Friday on May 22 at 7:05 pm. Season ticket packages are now available!
