Cox Hits Century Mark

March 9, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Medicine Hat Tigers News Release

Medicine Hat, AB -- "Tigers goal scored by #26 Cole Sanford, assisted by #36 Trevor Cox...." is a saying that Tigers fans are familiar with this season as the two 19 year olds currently lead the team in all 3 major offensive categories, points (Cox), goals (Sanford) and assists (Cox) and are a key leaders in the Tigers offense this season.

Cox was one point shy of the century mark heading into last Wednesday's game against the Moose Jaw Warriors. The Tabbies unfortunately got shut out, leaving Cox pointless. Saturday night the Kootenay Ice came to town and three minutes in, Cox and Sanford found their mojo. with Cox setting up Sanford for his 48th of the season. With the assist, #36 recorded point #100 on the season, becoming the first WHLer to do so.

The 100 point plateau is a hard milestone to reach in the WHL. Last year's captain Curtis Valk came oh so close to the mark with 92 points last season. The last Tiger to reach the mark was Emerson Etem in 2011-12, recording 107 points and 61 goals. During that season Cox was a 16 year old rookie who compiled 10 goals and 14 points in his first season in Medicine Hat.

"On that first day of training camp I wrote down some goals and reaching this mark was one of them. After I passed that one to Cole and he put it in we had a pretty cool moment there," said Cox after the game on Saturday.  "Cole and I have worked hard together all year, he's helped me to achieve this goal and it's just a really special moment, it hasn't really sunk in yet."

Cox has been leading the league in scoring for the past few months, at one point having a 17 point lead on his nearest opponent not named Cole Sanford. Cox currently holds a 3 point lead over the streaking Oliver Bjorkstrand from Portland as the season winds down.

With 6 game remaining in the Tigers schedule, Cox will look to become the first orange and black player to lead the WHL in scoring since Linden Vey did so in 2010-11 when he recorded 116 points.
