Soo Eagles Get Away with One

March 6, 2015 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Soo Eagles News Release

In front of 776 witnesses at Pullar Stadium, the Eagles pulled off a 4-1 theft of the Springfield Jr. Blues despite being out-shot 43-21 by the visitors. Rookie goalie Jack Berry was the main culprit in the Soo win. The masked bandit made 42 saves and was at his best in the second and third periods when the Eagles were out-shot by a combined margin of 33-13. It was Berry's first start since veteran goalie Chad Catt joined the Eagles from the Aberdeen Wings at the February 6 NAHL trade deadline. Catt had started six games in a row and posted a 5-0-1 record before Berry got the call on Saturday. While Berry repeatedly robbed the Blues, he was helped out by his goal post and cross bar along the way. As Berry had Springfield singing the Blues, defenceman Michael Caruso and forwards Leo Lumm and Chase Matson were putting up the points. Caruso had a pair of goals, giving him four on the season, while Lumm scored twice and added an assist. Lumm had scored his first goal as an Eagle on Friday after going pointless in his first eight games following a trade from the Odessa Jackalopes. Hustling forward Chase Matson also turned in an impact outing for the Eagles and produced a pair of assists. Saturday's win gave the Eagles five of a possible six points from the three-game series with Springfield and kept the Soo in second place in the North Division standings, one point up on the third-place Keystone Ice Miners. With nine games to go in the regular season, the Eagles have 58 points from a record of 28-21-2.
