Late Goal Lifts Hounds to Win in Trip Opener

March 6, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Soo Greyhounds News Release

WINDSOR, ON- It was a win. That pretty much summed things up for the Hounds on Thursday Night.

Starting off their week of action, and final four consecutive road games, a goal by MICHAEL BUNTING with just 1:30 to play helped the Hounds to their 48th victory of the season.

"I think it's a combination/function of the end of the season, it's a function of being on the road and having seven guys out of your lineup, it's not a very good recipe and a very hard game to get up for" began Hounds Head Coach Sheldon Keefe when asked if the game was a function of the end of the regular season for his club.

"You combine that with the fact you're playing a team that's polar opposites, playing desperate hockey and trying to make the playoffs. Our guys had to really be engaged and alive to be good today and we weren't so the game was a lot harder than it needed to be" he added.

During the last five straight games the Hounds have held their opposition to three goals in sixty minutes.

In this fifth meeting of the year with the Windsor, the Spitfires would garner that in the opening period along with three separate leads.

Cristiano DiGiacinto opened the scoring 3:05 into the first period starting with a turnover in the Hounds zone, Windsor's second attempt would be backhanded past BRANDON HALVERSON for the 1-0 Windsor lead.

Reigning OHL/CHL Player of the Week ANTHONY DEANGELO pulled the Hounds even just ten seconds into a shorthanded situation.

Skating in 2-on-2, the Hounds rearguard fired the puck from nearing the goal line and past Alex Fotinos at 7:49 for a 1-1 game.

On the same Windsor power play, Jamie Lewis tipped a left point shot to see Windsor take the 2-1 lead.

Then just over midway through the period, MICHAEL BUNTING cruised around the net before finding JARED MCCANN for his 33rd goal of the year at 12:02 and a 2-2 game.

But with just over five minutes to play in the first period (14:40), a turnover again cost the Hounds giving a gift to Lucas Venuto who put Windsor ahead 3-2 through the first period.

Moving forward the Hounds would outscore and outshoot the Spitfires in the second period, starting in the opening minute.

Fifty-four seconds into the second period, SERGEY TOLCHINSKY moved the puck to the far wing to MICHAEL BUNTING who found ANTHONY DEANGELO at the opposite side of the ice for a tap-in and a 3-3 game.

The Hounds would then notch their second goal of the period, on just their third shot at 5:13 to take their first lead on the night.

BRYAN MOORE showed patience moving closer to the goal before netting his 20th goal of the year and a 4-3 Greyhound lead.

ANTHONY DEANGELO and MAC HOLLOWELL, who recorded his 3rd OHL point in his 6th game played, had the assists.

Patrick Sanvido's high shot appeared to go off someone in front at 7:37 to again tie the game (4-4) as both sides went scoreless through the remainder of the period.

In the third, the Hounds were held shotless through the opening half of the period as Windsor was showing the desperation needed to stay on pace for the final playoff berth in the Western Conference.

Shortly after the Spitfires called a timeout, the Hounds would strike for the game winner.

With just 1:30 to play in regulation MICHAEL BUNTING tipped a left point shot from CONNOR BOLAND past Fotino's for a 5-4 Greyhound lead.

Then with 37 seconds to play in the third, ZACH SENYSHYN out battled the Spits up the right wing before firing his 25th goal of the season home, into an empty net, securing the Hounds 6-4 victory.

Windsor outshot the Hounds 13-7 in the third period.

With the win the Hounds improved their record to 48-11-0-2, good for 98 points on the season.

"I give them a lot of a pass. These are hard games to get up for especially when we don't have bodies we don't have players. I can't remember the last time we get on the bus to go on a road trip with 18 players (including goalies)" explained Keefe when asked if he gave his team a "pass" with their efforts.

"We're short players so it's a really strange dynamic around our team right now. We weren't very good today, but we'll have to be a lot better tomorrow" he concluded.
