Sarthou, Americans Cut Down Giants

Kennewick, WA- In a must win game for the Tri-City Americans (28-33-0-3, 59 pts), Evan Sarthou stepped up once again, stopping all 33 shots he faced, as he led the Americans to a 3-0 win against the Vancouver Giants (26-35-1-2, 55 pts) in front of 3,020 people at the Toyota Center on Wednesday night.

It was a back and forth contest in the first period, as both teams tried to establish game plans and gain the lead. Vancouver outshot Tri-City in the first, 9-7, but both goalies played well and kept the game knotted at zero after one period.

The second period was the same story, second chapter, as both teams fought for the first goal. The Americans had the shot advantage, 10-6, but once again, the goalies were brick walls, not allowing a goal heading into the third period.

Early in the third, the Americans broke the tie on the power play. Lucas Nickles tapped in a loose puck at the side of the net, putting Tri-City up 1-0. Less than two minutes later, Tri-City increased the lead to 2-0 on a goal from Tyler Sandhu. Vancouver tried to get back in the game, but Sarthou stopped everything the Giants fired his way. Richard Nejezchleb scored an empty net goal late to cap off the win for the Americans.

The win snaps a four game losing streak and a five game home losing streak. The Giants and Americans split the season series with two wins each.

Evan Sarthou records his seventh shutout this season, one shy of tying the all-time record of eight in a season, set by Carey Price in the 2004-05 season.

Tri-City spent 14 minutes in the penalty box and was 1-of-5 on the power play. Vancouver recorded 16 penalty minutes and was unsuccessful with five power play opportunities.

Payton Lee made 27 saves in the loss for Vancouver.

The Americans have a day off to recover before the team takes on the Everett Silvertips (38-19-3-4, 83 pts) for the final game this season at the Toyota Center. Game time is at 7:05 p.m. Tri-City earned a win in the last meeting, 2-1, in a shootout in Everett on Feb. 20.
