March 3, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Saginaw Spirit News Release

The Saginaw Spirit entertained about four thousand students during their annual Education Day game at the Dow Event Center, welcoming students and teachers around the area for some Tuesday morning hockey. The Spirit were looking to help secure a final playoff spot as the Plymouth Whalers travelled to the Dow for a home and home matchup. Their in-state rival took a 4-0 win over the Spirit, thanks to a strong second period and superb goaltending by Alex Nedeljkovic.

The Spirit and Whalers turned in a fast paced deadlocked period, leading to a scoreless first 20 minutes of play. The teams exchanged penalties, including an early first period scrap between Saginaw's leading goal scorer Dylan Sadowy and Plymouth's Yannick Rathgeb. Saginaw's starting goaltender Evan Comier stopped 13 shots in the period, while Plymouth's Alex Nedeljkovic turned away all 12 of Saginaw's first period shots.

It was anybody's game heading into the second period of play, with both teams looking to take the first lead of the morning. The Plymouth Whalers were able to capitalize on some strong offensive pressure and beat Saginaw's defense on four important occasions, giving way to a 4-0 lead when the second period concluded. Mitch Jones scored first for the Whalers, followed by a goal from Sonny Milano just 12 seconds later. Will Bitten and Connor Chatham also recorded a goal a piece for Plymouth to make it a 4-0 game at 14:44 of the second. After 40 minutes of play the scoreboard read Plymouth 4, Saginaw 0, with the visiting team leading shots on goal in the second period 13-11.

The Saginaw Spirit and Plymouth Whalers battled it out in the third period, with Saginaw looking to catch up to Plymouth and the Whalers looking to hold their four-goal lead. Both teams were unsuccessful in finding the back of the net, leading to a deadlocked third period. The final score read Plymouth 4, Saginaw 0, with final shots on net favoring the Spirit 34-31.

The Spirit will hit the road to take on the Whalers on Thursday night at Compuware arena to begin their four game road stretch before returning to the Dow Event Center on March 14th. Saturday March 14th the Spirit will play host to the Plymouth Whalers for the last time at the Dow Event Center this season. Puck is scheduled to drop at 7:11 p.m. After Thursday's game in Plymouth the Spirit will face off against Owen Sound on Saturday, Kitchener on Sunday, and Sarnia the following Friday. These games can be heard on the flagship station of the Saginaw Spirit FM Talk and Sports WSGW 100.5.
