Danbury Westerners News Release

Danbury, CT- March 2, 2015: The Danbury Westerners, the longest tenured team in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, are proud to announce the signing of Right-Handed Pitcher Mitchell Leeds to the pitching staff for the 2015 season. A native of Rye, NY, the imposing right-hander is currently a junior at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. Leeds will bring a fastball approaching 90 mph to Danbury this summer.

Pitching for the Lafayette Leopards, Leeds has proven he can have success at a high level. He won his 2015 debut by pitching a strong 6.1 innings in a win over UMBC. Last season, Leeds started ten games with a record of 2-4. A workhorse for the team, he pitched in 55.1 innings. His peripherals were sharp as he had a 3.90 ERA with 47 strikeouts, 21 walks, and a WHIP of 1.50. Hitters struggled against the righty as they managed only six home runs and a .287 average against him. In his freshman year of 2013, Leeds proved to be versatile as he led the team with three saves while also starting five games. That season, Leeds finished with 32 strikeouts and a 4.28 ERA. Hitters managed to hit a measly .213 against him.

Arguably the best performance of Leeds' career came on April 27th, 2014 in a game that pitted his Leopards against the rival Mountain Hawks of Lehigh University. In this game Leeds pitched 6.2 innings and didn't allow an earned run. He finished with three walks and seven strikeouts including the three he recorded when he struck out the side in the fourth inning.

In 2013, Leeds played in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League for the D.C. Grays. The righty appeared in nine games, starting eight of them. He was 6-1 with a 3.14 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 48.2 innings of work. He made the South All-Star team that season, pitching one scoreless inning in the All-Star game.

Paul Schaffer, President of the Danbury Westerners, commented, "Mitchell is the type of pitcher who should thrive in the NECBL, as he has demonstrated much success throughout his collegiate career. I look forward to meeting him this summer and contribute to the success of our program."
