Americans Drop Second Straight against Chiefs

Spokane, WA- The Spokane Chiefs (30-27-3-1, 64 pts) made it two wins a row, earning an 8-1 win against the Tri-City Americans (27-33-0-3, 57 pts) in front of 9,120 fans at Spokane Arena on Saturday night.

Spokane came out and set the tone in the first period, outshooting Tri-City 19-6 in the first period. The Chiefs got on the board 7:59 into the first, as Curtis Miske fired a wrist shot that found the back of the net to put Spokane up 1-0 after the first period.

Early in the second, the Chiefs increased the lead on a goal from Blair Oneschuk that was reviewed, but confirmed after replay to put Spokane up 2-0. Two minutes later, Adam Helewka was able to fire home the puck to put the Chiefs ahead 3-0. Less than 30 seconds later, Liam Stewart scored to increase the lead to four goals. Miske notched his second goal of the game 12 minutes into the second to make it 5-0 Chiefs, followed by Helewka's second goal of the night to put Spokane up 6-0 after two periods.

The Chiefs kept the momentum going in the third period, as Calder Brooks added a goal 7:14 into the third to put Spokane up 7-0. The win was capped off as Miske completed the hat trick to go up 8-0. The Americans got on the board with 15 seconds left in the game, as Taylor Vickerman scored on the power play to end Garret Hughson's shutout attempt.

Tri-City has lost a season-high four straight games and has been outscored 12-1 in the last two games against Spokane.

The Americans spent 38 minutes in the penalty box, and converted 1-of-7 power play chances. The Chiefs recorded 41 penalty minutes and converted 2-of-7 chances with a man advantage.

Beck Warm, in his first career WHL start, made 31 saves in the loss. Garret Hughson earned his second straight shutout, stopping 22 shots in the win.

The Americans will travel home and have a couple of days to recover before taking on the Vancouver Giants (26-33-1-2, 55 pts) this Wednesday, March 4, at the Toyota Center. Game time is at 7:05 p.m. The Giants earned a win in the last meeting, 6-2, in Kennewick on Feb. 14. Vancouver trails Tri-City by two points for the final wild card spot in the Western Conference.
