Tulsa Oilers News Release

RAPID CITY, SD - The Tulsa Oilers' five-game win streak came to a screeching halt on Saturday night at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in a 6-2 loss to the Rapid City Rush. Winners of six consecutive road games, the Oilers were outshot 37-23 in Saturday's contest and ended the season series against the Rush with a 5-6-1 record. Rush rookie Cody Ferriero scored a pair of goals and handed out an assist to help push the home side into a tie with Tulsa for third place in the Central Division playoff chase.

A scoreless stalemate through the first three quarters of the opening period was finally broken by Rapid City's leading scorer, Jesse Schultz. Rush rookie Cody Ferriero threaded a pass from the corner into the low slot and Schultz went down to one knee to unleash a one-timer past Tulsa goalie Kevin Carr at the 16:49 mark. The 25th tally of the season for Schultz gave his squad a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission. The two clubs traded power plays in the first period but neither side was able to capitalize on the man-advantage.

Nine and a half minutes into the middle frame, Daniel Barczuk poked a rebound through Carr to give the Rush a 2-0 advantage. Just 34 seconds later, the Oilers found the answer thanks to a drive to the front of the Rush net by Kyle Bochek. The Tulsa center pushed the puck off the pad of John Griggs and Matt Larke slid the loose puck across the goal line before Griggs could make a diving recovery. The Rapid City lead was cut in half on Larke's 8th goal of the season. An Oilers' turnover in the attacking zone led to a 2-on-1 scenario for the Rush and Kale Kerbashian was able to orchestrate a give-and-go with Ferriero to restore Rapid City's two-goal cushion at 17:01.

Early in the third, with both sides already down a skater due to off-setting roughing minors, Oilers' center Jon Booras was called for hooking. On the ensuing 4-on-3 Rush power play, Schultz sauced a pass across the top of the Tulsa crease that was slammed home by Ferriero for his second strike of the night. At 6:44 Mathieu Brisebois finished a drive to the net by lifting a backhand over the blocker shoulder of Carr and the rout was on. Tulsa rookie Jeff Jubinville extended his point streak to five games with a rebound goal at 10:51 of the third, but once again the Rush responded almost instantly to dash what little hope the Oilers had left. Barczuk notched his second goal of the night at 11:27 and the Rush cruised to the finish line for their 11th home victory of the season.

The Oilers failed to muster 30 shots for the third straight contest and went 0-for-6 on the power play opportunities. Carr made 31 saves in a losing effort and the Oilers surrendered at least one power play goal for the 11th time in their last 13 games.

Tulsa's season-long eight-game road trip continues Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. with a tilt against the Missouri Mavericks.
