 Oshawa Generals

Bulls Bounce Back with 2-1 Win

February 28, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Oshawa Generals News Release

The East Division battle continued in Belleville tonight with the Bulls coming out with the 4-1 win. The Generals were hot off an 8-4 win over the Bulls last night, which earned them an Eastern Conference title but couldn't beat Charlie Graham in net tonight.

Early into the period, Bradley Latour sent Brett Gustavsen flying after the whistle, which sent the Generals to an early penalty kill. The Bulls had no luck on the first power play but Jordan Subban put his team on the board after he banked a shot from the goal line at 9:19. The Generals responded to the Subban goal on their power play opportunity. Gustavsen was called for interference and Tobias Lindberg was fed a perfect pass from Michael McCarron, which evened things at 1-1. Another penalty came to Oshawa after Josh Brown shoved Maurizio Colella into the boards while moments later Hunter Smith and Adam Bignell dropped the gloves. As Stephen Harper went off for cross checking near the end of the first, the teams saw 4 on 4 hockey to close the period. Oshawa outshot their opponents 18-10 in the first 20 minutes.

Despite a few power play chances for both sides, there were no goals scored in the second period. After Linbberg's goal on the power play in the first, the Generals couldn't seem to find their groove on the man advantage with three opportunities in the second. Brent Pedersen showed some hand eye coordination after knocking the puck out of mid air into the net but officials immediately called it off. The Bulls were also handed their fourth power play opportunity of the game but were unable to beat the Generals. Oshawa put 11 shots on goal in the second compared to eight for Belleville.

The Generals and Bulls were off to a slower third period compared to last night's meeting when Oshawa managed five goals. It looked like the Generals were going to take the lead as Pedersen set Lindberg up perfectly but Graham continued to keep Belleville in the game with a huge stop. At 5:35, Adam Laishram beat Brodeur and made it 2-1 for the Bulls. Mistele came close to tying the game but Belleville continued to put pressure on as Niki Petti scored with less than five minutes remaining in the game. With under 1:30 to go, the Generals had an extra attacker with Brodeur to the bench but were unable to tie things up. Welychka scored an empty net goal late in the game and secured the 4-1 win for Belleville.

The Generals were missing some key players tonight due to illness including Dal Colle, Mermis and Appleby. Tonight marked Oshawa's sixth meeting with the Bulls, and their first loss to Belleville this season.

Generals hockey will continue tomorrow on home ice when they host the Peterborough Petes for a 6:05p.m. puck drop. Catch Oshawa back at the GM Centre on Saturday March 14, 2015 at 7:05p.m. To purchase tickets, click here, visit the GM Centre Box Office, or call 1-877-436-8811.
