February 28, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, Me. - The Portland Pirates took the ice against the Manchester Monarchs and won 4-3 on Saturday night at the Cross Insurance Arena in front of a packed home crowd. Portland players donned special bright pink jerseys with a pink ribbon embroidered beneath the Salty Pete logo on the front. The pink jerseys were worn as part of Pink in the Rink Night presented by TD Bank to support the American Cancer Society and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The night honored breast cancer survivors and those continuing to fight the disease.

The Pirates got the scoring started at 5:43 in the first period when Alex Bolduc netted a power play goal, assisted by Joel Hanley and Jordon Southorn. Manchester answered back four minutes later at 9:50 on a goal from Scott Sabourin, assisted by teammates Kevin Raine and Jeff Schultz.

The second period started with a bang when Portland's Bolduc and Manchester's Colin Miller dropped the gloves for a scrap seven seconds into the period. Midway through the frame, Evan Oberg scored the go-ahead goal for the Pirates at 9:30, assisted by Tyler Gaudet and Greg Miller. The Monarchs answered back quickly, netting a goal at 11:01 from Nic Dowd, assisted by Michael Mersch and Justin Auger. There was a particularly bleak part of the game when a scuffle behind the Portland net at the 15:28 mark took a turn for the worse and Oberg was escorted off the ice on a stretcher.

Manchester took their first and only lead of the game in the third period. Josh Gratton found the back of the net at 5:12, assisted by Zach O'Brien and Vincent LoVerde. The Pirates tied the game at three when Brendan Shinnimin scored at 12:31, assisted by Jordan Szwarz and Justin Hodgman. They took the lead late in the period on a Szwarz power play goal at 17:56, assisted by Southorn.

The Pirates redeemed themselves on the power play tonight, scoring on both of their extra man advantages. Portland goalie Mike McKenna saved 26 of 29 shots in his first game for the Pirates since being reassigned from the Arizona Coyotes. Jean-Francois Berube saved 23 of 27 shots.

The Pirates are home at the Cross Insurance Arena again tomorrow afternoon, when they will play the Springfield Falcons. There will be a post-game skate with the Pirates players, and also a chalk talk with Pirates coach Trent Whitfield across the street from the arena at Holiday Inn by the Bay after the game.
