Tri-City Americans News Release
Kennewick, WA- The Tri-City Americans (27-32-0-3, 57 pts) woes at the Toyota Center continued on Friday night, as the Spokane Chiefs (29-27-3-1, 62 pts) earned a 4-0 win in front of 4,140 fans.
The Americans got off to a solid start, as they were able to control the puck and get a majority of the shots to start the game. But Spokane was able to get the first goal, as Jackson Playfair fired the puck towards the net, which deflected off a Tri-City defender and into the net for a 1-0 Spokane lead. Tri-City had a 12-7 shot advantage in the first period, but Spokane had the one goal lead going into the second.
Tri-City started off the second period the same as the first, controlling the puck well, but wasn't able to get any quality chances. The Chiefs got on the board again midway through the second on a goal from Adam Helewka to put Spokane up 2-0 after two periods.
Spokane increased the lead early in the third, as Riley Whittingham slapped home a loose puck to put the Chiefs ahead 3-0. The Americans tried to get something going, but were unable to gather any momentum. The Chiefs capped off the win with a late power play goal from Nic Charif to seal the victory.
Tri-City has lost five straight home games and snaps a two game win streak against Spokane.
The Americans and Chiefs both racked up 10 penalty minutes. Spokane converted 2-of-5 power play opportunities while the Americans weren't successful with five power play chances.
Garret Hughson stopped 28 shots in the shutout win while Nicholas Sanders made 21 saves in the loss.
The Americans hit the road tomorrow looking for revenge as they face the Chiefs at Spokane Arena. Game time is at 7:05 p.m. Listen to the game on NewsTalk 870, or watch the game on SWX, WHL Live or at Kimo's, your Americans home away from home.
