North Bay Battalion News Release

KITCHENER, Ont. - Nick Paul scored two goals and assisted on two more to pace the North Bay Battalion to a 5-1 Ontario Hockey League victory Friday night over the Kitchener Rangers.

Nick Moutrey contributed one goal and two assists and Alex Henriksson and Brett McKenzie also scored, while goaltender Jake Kment, making his second OHL start, provided 15 saves.

The Battalion lifted its won-lost-extended record to 30-17-11 for 71 points, second in the Central Division and fourth in the Eastern Conference. The Troops, who captured the conference title last season, ended a four-game losing skid with a 4-2 win Thursday night over the host Barrie Colts that clinched a conference quarterfinal berth.

Darby Llewellyn scored for Kitchener, 27-21-10 for 64 points, fifth in the Midwest Division and sixth in the Western Conference. The Rangers have lost four straight games since a 5-1 victory at North Bay on Feb. 19. Goaltender Jake Paterson faced 24 shots before a crowd of 7,218 at the Dom Cardillo Arena in the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.

Henriksson opened the scoring 1:02 into the first period. Mike Amadio took a pass from Ryan Kujawinski, wheeled clockwise behind the net with two defenders in tow and fed the puck in front to Henriksson for his 18th goal of the season.

The Rangers replied at 5:25 on a similar play. Mike Davies worked behind the Battalion net and sent the puck in front to Llewellyn alone in the slot. He beat Kment with a wrister low to the glove side.

Paul scored what proved to be the winner at 13:13. Miles Liberati fired the puck at the net from the left point, and Paul shoveled his own rebound home from the left lip of the crease.

Moutrey made it 3-1 at 10:34 of the second period. Zach Shankar kept the puck in at the left point and got it to Paul, who stepped around Frank Hora and fired to the far left side. Moutrey poked the disc home for his 19th goal of the season and his fourth since a trade from the Saginaw Spirit.

Moutrey and Paul combined to set up North Bay's fourth goal, at 18:20, as McKenzie finished off a three-on-two rush by charging down the left side and snapping a Moutrey feed over Paterson's right shoulder.

An interference penalty to the Troops' Mike Baird at 12:11 of the third period prompted Kitchener coach Troy Smith to call Paterson to the bench for a sixth attacker.

The Rangers were unable to mount any offence and, when Dmitrii Sergeev failed to keep the puck in at the Battalion blue line, penalty killer Paul broke down the right wing and deposited the disc into the empty net at 13:11 for his team-leading 33rd goal.

The Battalion outshot the Rangers 7-4 in the period, with the home side's best scoring chance coming in the 10th minute when David Miller attempted to finish a wraparound at the right post.

The Battalion visits the Niagara IceDogs at 7 p.m. Saturday to complete a road trip of three games in as many nights. The game can be seen live in North Bay on TVCogeco Cable 12 and heard on Country 600 CKAT.
