Kalamazoo Wings News Release

KALAMAZOO - Matching a season-high for goals in a game with eight, the Kalamazoo Wings snapped a three-game losing streak in convincing fashion by disposing of the Toledo Walleye 8-3 Friday night at Wings Stadium.

Starting with more energy, the Walleye took a quick 1-0 lead just 2:42 into the contest. Josh Holmstrom (10th) found the loose puck and lifted it up and over Joel Martin after a scrum in front of the net.

Picking up their play midway through the stanza, Kalamazoo found the equalizer from Joe Sova (2nd). Jake Trask picked up his first point as a member of the K-Wings with the primary assist. The goal ended a streak of 132:01without a goal allowed for the Walleye.

Continuing to carry the momentum, the K-Wings took their first lead of the night early in the second period with Sova's (3rd) second of the night. Coming onto the ice from a line change, Sova kept the puck in the zone at the blue line and ripped it past the glove of Jeff Lerg.

The Walleye would not stay down long as Alden Hirschfeld (9th) trickled one through the legs of Martin to tie the game at 2-2.

Just five minutes later, Matt Caria (17th) gave the K-Wings the lead for good. Finding the puck behind the net, Justin Taylor completed a perfect pass to Caria who was standing free in the slot.

Adding to their lead soon after, Jean Bourbeau (5th) deflected a Steven Kaunisto shot though the legs of Lerg.

Giving the Walleye life early in the third, Michael Leone picked up the puck behind the K-Wings net and connected with A.J Jenks (2nd), who had found space in the slot.

Any chance of a Toledo comeback ended when Gergo Nagy found the back of the net for his eighth of the season midway in the period.

Bourbeau (6th) netted his second of the night with less than two minutes remaining with an empty-netter from center ice.

With Lerg back between the pipes, the K-Wings notched one more tally off the tape of Lane Scheidl (9th).

Bourbeau (2 goals, 1 assist), Sova (2 goals, 1 assist) and Sam Ftorek (3 assists) each finished the game with three points and a K-Wings season-high plus/minus game rating of +5.

Kalamazoo will commence a four-game road trip tomorrow, Saturday, February 28th with a 7:15 p.m. encounter at the Huntington Center against Toledo.

The K-Wings will return home next Saturday, March 7th, with a 7:30 p.m. face-off versus the Fort Wayne Komets during Autism Awareness Night and Special Olympic Polar Plunge Night presented by Sam's Club and supported by Consumers Credit Union.
