Bridgeport Islanders News Release

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Three third period goals by the Springfield Falcons helped them down the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 5-3 at MassMutual Center on Friday night.

Michael Chaput scored twice in the final frame, including the game-winner with 4:42 left in the contest, to give the Falcons the win.

The Sound Tigers got on the board first thanks to one of their latest additions. After a well-paced opening five minutes, Matt Lashoff dished a pass to his defense partner Matt Carkner, who rifled a slapshot past Falcons goalie Anton Forsberg for the 1-0 lead. Carkner's first of the season was also his first as a Sound Tiger after being loaned to the team by the Islanders back on February 16.

Springfield wasted no time evening up the score, coming back with a goal of their own just two minutes after Carkner's tally. Kevin Poulin stopped the initial shot from the point, but T.J. Tynan was able to score on the rebound to tie the game at 1-1. Tynan's seventh of the year completed the scoring in a quick opening 20 minutes.

Mike Hoeffel gave the Falcons their first lead of the game just 49 seconds into the second period. Much like the first Springfield goal, Poulin stopped the first shot, but Hoeffel was able to poke the puck past the goaltender's glove before he could cover it and made it 2-1.

Bridgeport had a quick response of their own just three minutes later. Harry Zolnierczyk threw a shot towards the Springfield net that was stopped, but stayed with the play and went top shelf stick side past Forsberg to tie the game at two. Sebastian Collberg and Ryan Pulock earned the assists on Zolnierczyk's 16 th goal of the season.

It looked as if Springfield would regain the lead late in the period, but Poulin came up large with a pair of big saves. First it was a stop on Sean Collins with the glove on a 2-on-1, then a sprawling stop on a rebound to keep the game tied.

A late Sound Tigers power play in the middle frame led to their second lead of the game. After getting nothing in the first minute and a half of the man advantage, a broken play led to a breakaway for Alan Quine. The forward slipped the puck five-hole on Forsberg to make it 3-2 Bridgeport going into the third period.

Springfield came back early in the third period off a fortuitous bounce on the power play. Chaput received a pass from T.J. Tynan, then threw the puck towards the net. The pass hit a Sound Tigers defenseman near the crease and snuck by Poulin to tie the game at 3-3.

It was Chaput again, this time with time winding down, to propel the Falcons past the Sound Tigers. Kerby Rychel flicked a shot off Poulin's pad with the rebound landing right on Chaput's stick. He made no mistake, firing home his seventh goal of the season, to change the lead for the fourth and final time.

Dana Tyrell added an empty net goal to seal the game. Poulin put in a strong performance, stopping 35 of 39 shots in the loss. Both power plays went 1-for-2 on the night.

The teams will face off once again tomorrow night at the MassMutual Center. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.

Notes: Carkner's goal was his first in the American Hockey League since January 17, 2009 as a member of the Binghamton Senators against the Sound Tigers. The back-up goalie for Bridgeport that night was current equipment manager Leni DiCostanzo...Alan Quine's goal gave him a three-game goal streak and scored in his first game since his 22 nd birthday on Wednesday...Bridgeport lost its first game when leading after two periods this season (15-1-0-0).
