Saint John Riptide News Release

(Saint John, NB): The Saint John Mill Rats were out shot by a hungry London Lightning team, 119-103, in the Mill Rats regular season finale.

The Mill Rats started slow, trailing 11-3 before a quick recovery and tied the score 22-22 after one.

The Mill Rats led 50-40 with 53 seconds left in the half, but turnovers and missed shots led to a free throw, a layup by Al Stewart, and then Sefton Barrett drained a three pointer on a rebound off a block by Raheem Singleton to beat the halftime buzzer. The score at the half was 50-46 for Saint John.

With the Mill Rats trailing 64-59, Anthony Anderson was assessed a questionable foul followed by a technical foul. The Lightning turned that into a 5-point possession and a 69-59 lead.

Ricky Volcy did his best to keep Saint John close drilling three pointers, but London matched him from the perimeter each time.

Volcy led Saint John with 25 points, Anthony Anderson 21, and Kenny Jones 13. London had three players with over twenty points: Marvin Phillips, Ed Horton 21, and Brent Jennings 20.

The game did not affect Saint John in the standings and a priority was to get through the game without any injuries. London needed the win and got it, as they are in a tight race versus Brampton for the #2 seed in the Central Division.

With Halifax beating the Island Storm, 108-94 tonight in PEI, the Mill Rats will face the Storm in the first round of the playoffs. The playoff schedule will be released shortly.

Saint John concludes the season at 17-15 while London improves to 17-14 with one game remaining.
