Regina Pats News Release

Regina, Saskatchewan - The Regina Pats (33-19-4-4) couldn't muster up a win on the final Weiner Wednesday of the regular season as they were edged 5-4 in a shootout to the Kootenay Ice (32-27-1-2).

Taylor Cooper opened the scoring just over seven minutes into the opening frame. The Pats forward showcased some slick hands, dangling around Cale Fleury, before going short-side, high glove on Wyatt Hoflin for his 23rd of the year. Four minutes later, Adam Brooks worked the biscuit out of the corner and out-waited Hoflin. The Ice's goaltender sprawled out and robbed the Pats' forward, but Pavel Padakin cleaned up the garbage to put the Blue and White ahead by two. With 30 seconds left on the clock, the first penalty of the game was called against Patrick D'Amico for tripping. The Pats went into the break still down a man, while up on the scoreboard 2-0, and on the shot clock, 15-7.

Early in the second, Brooks had an excellent chance to capitalize short-handed when he poked the puck away from the Ice's defense and had a partial break. Hoflin came up big with the left pad and rejected the forward of a goal. D'Amico eventually returned to the ice with the Blue and White's two goal lead still in tact. From the point, Rinat Valiev let go a harmless shot which was redirected by River Beattie to get the Ice on the board. The Pats got one back, though, all thanks to Sam Steel, but the home team's two goal lead didn't last long. Pats net minder Daniel Wapple was down and out when Jaedon Descheneau and company stormed the crease. After a few whacks, Descheneau eventually slid one past the Pats' keeper to make it a 3-2 game. Just before the period expired, Sam Reinhart went low on Wapple to even everything up at three apiece heading into the second intermission. The Blue and White edged the Ice in shots, 24-21.

The game was up for grabs in the third and Wapple showed he was hungry for the win. Not even 10 minutes into the stanza, and the goaltender had stopped nine shots. The Ice eventually solved Wapple, courtesy of Tim Bozon, to take their first lead of the game just after the television timeout. With the Pats' goaltender out of his cage for the extra attacker, Connor Hobbs' harmless shot from the blue line fooled Hoflin and evened the game up, 4-4. The horn sounded and extra time was needed to determine a winner.

The best chance of the extra frame went to Brooks who had everyone beat but Hoflin. Overtime solved nothing as the game went into a shootout.

In the fifth round, Descheneau scored the lone goal to lift the Ice to a 5-4 victory.

The Blue and White return to action Friday night when they play host to a couple familiar faces in Dryden Hunt, Kyle Burroughs, and the Medicine Hat Tigers in a 7:00 puck drop. Tune in with Home Depot Pats Hockey on 620 CKRM or WHL Live Web TV.
