Walleye Notes

A Historic Four Win Week: Toledo started the week with a hard fought 2-1 shootout win in Fort Wayne Wednesday night. Goaltender Jeff Lerg stopped all five shooters he faced for the win. Defensemen Tyler Elbrecht and Joe Houk each scored for the Walleye Friday in a 3-1 win over Cincinnati. Goaltender Neil Conway stopped all 32 shots he faced Saturday in a 5-0 win over Wheeling. Troy Schwab scored the first of twelve Walleye goals Sunday in a 12-0 win over Gwinnett. Toledo outscored teams this past week 22-2.

Records All Over the Place: Sunday was a record day in Toledo ECHL history. The Walleye set new Walleye single game records in goals scored with 12 and the largest margin of victory (12-0). Both of these tie the Toledo ECHL record set in a 12-0 Toledo Storm win on February 16, 1994 at Huntsville. It was the first time in the ECHL this margin has been reached since a 12-0 win by Florida over Augusta on November 28, 2008.

Player Records from Sunday: Alden Hirschfeld (1G, 5A) and Anthony Luciani (2G, 4A) set a new Walleye record for most points in a game breaking the old mark of five reached four times. Hirschfeld also set a new bar with five assists in one game besting the old record of 4 and he also reached a new high with his plus seven in the contest (plus five reached multiple times). Justin Mercier collected the fourth hat trick of the season for the Walleye, which is also a new record (the 2009-10 Walleye had three).

There is a New Walleye Leader: The win Wednesday secured the 21st victory of the season for goaltender Jeff Lerg. That set a new single season record for most wins by a Walleye goaltender. The previous mark was held at 20 by goaltender Kent Simpson in the 2012-13 season. Lerg currently has 23 wins, which is the second most in the ECHL.

Defense First: Toledo allowed just two goals in the last four games and has posted back to back games with shutouts for the first time in Walleye history (Neil Conway Saturday and Jeff Lerg Sunday). That feat has only been done one other time in Toledo ECHL history done by the duo of Scott Fankhouser (February 9, 2005) 5-0 over Atlantic City and Logan Koopmans (February 12, 2005) 3-0 over Johnstown. For the first time this season the Walleye rank first in the ECHL, allowing just 2.46 goals against per game. The two goals allowed over the last four games is a Walleye record by one (3, allowed from January 31 through February 7, 2013) and the five total shutouts equals the most in Walleye history (2010-11).

Packing Them In: The ninth sellout crowd of the season filled the seats at the Huntington Center Saturday night against Wheeling. The single season record for sellouts for the Walleye is 12 set back in the first season (2009-10) at the downtown facility. The Walleye are averaging 6,592 on the season which is third most in the ECHL.

Speaking of Good Vibes at the Huntington: Three more home wins for Toledo this past week has set a new Walleye record for consecutive home wins at six straight. The previous best was four straight hit five times since 2009. The Walleye have not lost a home contest since January 24 (3-1 to Allen).

The Kalamazoo Swing: Toledo starts a three game weekend Friday night in Kalamazoo. The whole weekend will be dominated by the Walleye and Wings with Kalamazoo coming to Toledo for games Saturday and Sunday. Toledo has won four of the six meetings so far this season with Kalamazoo, outscoring the Wings 18-12.

Walleye Player of the Week:

Anthony Luciani (3 goals - 6 assists = 9 points, plus 10)

Walleye Goaltender of the Week:

Jeff Lerg (3-0-0, .68 GAA, .975 save %)
