Philadelphia Union News Release

Chester, Pa. (Feb. 23, 2015) - Philadelphia Union announced Monday it has signed goalkeeper John McCarthy. A Philadelphia native, McCarthy starred at North Catholic High School before attending La Salle University. In his first season as a professional last year, he was named USL Pro's Goalkeeper of the Year. Per club and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"John is a player we know well as we've watched his development closely coming out of Philly and last season in USL Pro," technical director Chris Albright said. "He'll continue to grow as he transitions into MLS and he gives us depth at an important position."

McCarthy, 22, was also the USL Pro Rookie of the Year in 2014 after a strong showing with Rochester Rhinos. He led the league with a 0.72 goals against average after allowing just 13 goals in 18 games. McCarthy posted an 8-4-6 record and had 10 shutouts with 41 saves. In College, he was a four-year starter at La Salle, a three-time All-Atlantic 10 performer, an NSCAA Scholar All-American and was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy watch list heading into his senior year.

"It's a dream come true to sign with my hometown team," McCarthy said. "I'm thrilled with the opportunity and am looking forward at having a chance to contribute to such a great organization"

McCarthy also starred for local youth teams in the area. He played for Lighthouse Soccer Club, Philadelphia Soccer Club, Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer's Olympic Development Program, FC Delco and Match Fit Academy FC.
