Mavericks Topped 4-3 by Rush in Regulation

Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, MO - The Missouri Mavericks fell short 4-3 in regulation to the visiting Rapid City Rush on Saturday night at Independence Events Center. The Mavs wore special pink jerseys during the contest which were auctioned off after the game. Proceeds from the auction benefitted Susan G. Komen of Greater Kansas City.

The Rush were the first to make a mark on the scoreboard, just as they have in their last seven victories over the Mavericks this season, and making the tally was Jesse Schultz, the leading goal-scorer for the Rush against the Mavs. Schultz wasn't done with his scoreboard run, as he would see another two points on the board for Rapid City before the end of the game.

Trailing 2-0 following Schultz's second goal of the contest at 18:17 of the first period, Andrew Courtney continued his goal streak and lit up the IEC with only 27 seconds left in the frame, cutting the Rush lead in half 2-1. Sebastien Thinel and Lindsay Sparks were credited with the assists on Courtney's 21st goal of the season for Missouri.

Rapid City made another move only 1:52 into the second period, when once again Jesse Schultz bested Mavericks goaltender Mike Clemente for his third tally of the night to boost the Rush lead 3-1. Mavericks forward Jared Brown answered back at 6:40 to bring the home team back within 1 point of the Rush 3-2 with help from defenseman Patch Alber.

Missouri was given their fifth power play opportunity of the evening at 5:28 of the third frame when Cody Ferriero was sent to the box for high-sticking, but the Rush turned the situation to their favor when Winston Day Chief scored short-handed with help from Patrick Cullen to expand the visiting team's lead 4-2.

The Mavericks played hard, firing relentless shots on goal at former Missouri net minder John Griggs, who stone-walled them all until the final 1:34 of the game when Jack Downing brought the sold out arena to life as the Mavs were poised within striking distance of their second overtime game in two nights.

But the clock was against Missouri on Saturday night, and despite a 6-on-4 advantage over the Rush for nearly a minute of play with goaltender Mike Clemente pulled for the extra attackers, the Mavericks were unable to score the tying goal and collect a point over Rapid City, falling 4-3 in regulation.

The Missouri Mavericks play their next game on the road in Rapid City on Tuesday, Feb. 24 before returning home to Independence Events Center for another set of home games on Friday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, Feb. 28. Both contests are scheduled to begin at 7:05pm (CST).

Single game tickets are available online at TicketMaster.com or in-person at the Silverstein Eye Centers Box Office at Independence Events Center.
