Plymouth, MI - Slater Doggett's goal at 17:05 of the third period lifted the Spits to a hard-fought, 2-1 win over the Whalers Friday night at Compuware Arena.

The win moved Windsor (23-30-2-1) into a tie for eighth place and the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, thanks to Ottawa's 4-1 win over the Spirit in the nation's capital. And it ends a quarter-century old rivalry with the Plymouth franchise, which has been sold to a new ownership group that will play out of Flint, Michigan starting next season.

"The game was a battle. Hard hitting. With a playoff atmosphere," said head coach Bob Boughner. "And it came down to the last few minutes. Just like a Plymouth-Windsor battle should be." After a fast-paced, scoreless first period, Markus Soberg (13) opened the scoring at 17:14 of the second, converting a Sam Povorozniouk feed on the power play.

Former Spitfire Ryan Moore evened the game less than four minutes into the third.

That set the stage for an epic goaltending battle between Alex Fotinos (42 saves) and Alex Nedeljkovic (41 saves) for the next 14 minutes and Doggett's heroics.

The 20-year-old took a nifty Lucas Venuto feed and beat Nedeljkovic high to the gloves side with a quick backhand, tying Trevor Murphy for the team lead in goals with 19.

The Spits are off until Thursday the 26th, when they host Travis Konecny and the Ottawa 67s.
