Rivermen Sweep Weekend Series with Knoxville

PEORIA- The Peoria Rivermen won their second game against Knoxville Ice Bears this weekend and extended their lead in the Southern Professional Hockey League to 8 points with a 3-1 victory on Friday night at Carver Arena.

After a slow beginning to the first period, the Rivermen broke through on a power play at 17:05 with an assist from the back of the left circle by Alex Hudson and Jason Cohen to Garrett Vermeersch deep in the slot for a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.

With 36 seconds left in the second period the Rivermen got goal number two after a scramble behind the left post where Dan Bremner snuck it in behind Knoxville goalie Bryan Hince with help from Alec Hagaman and Cole Ruwe to increase the lead to 2-0.

Knoxville cut the margin to 2-1 when Jarrett Rush redirected a Robbie Donahoe wrister from the high slot on a power play with 12:25 left in the third..

The Rivermen breathed a sigh of relief when a slap shot from the left circle by Knoxville made its way into the net but was waved off after being played by a high stick.

The Rivermen sealed the win with 20.6 seconds left in the game when Nick Schneider passed the puck up to Jake Trask who got a breakaway down the right side of the ice and scored into an empty net.

Dustin Carlson earned the win in goal with 20 saves while Bryan Hince took the loss with 31 stops. Both teams were 1-for-3 on power plays.

The Rivermen now lead the Ice Bears and the rest of the Southern Professional Hockey League by 8 points with a record of 29-13-3 for 61 points. Peoria ended the season series with Knoxville by winning 10 of the 12 meetings. The Ice Bears remain in second place with a mark of 25-16-3 for 53 points.

The Rivermen are off until a three-game series next Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Carver Arena against the Fayetteville FireAntz. Saturday is Chicago Blackhawks Night featuring an appearance by Blackhawks great Bobby Hull, special jerseys worn by the Rivermen and auctioned after the game, $2 select drafts and $2 hot dogs and other prizes.
