New Bedford Bay Sox News Release

NEW BEDFORD, MA (February 18, 2015) - The New Bedford Bay Sox are pleased to announce that New Bedford High Hall of Fame athlete and current Fairhaven High baseball coach Rudy Bulgar has been hired to join Manager Kyle Fernandes' staff as the pitching coach of the Bay Sox for the 2015 season. Rudy was a highly decorated high school athlete, helping NBH to baseball state championships in "˜93 and "˜94. Rudy was then selected in the MLB draft by the Kansas City Royals but decided to take his talents to URI, where he played D1 baseball for the Rams, as well as football, as a full scholarship athlete. Rudy pitched as the closer for the Rams for 2 seasons.

"We are extremely fortunate to have Rudy join our baseball club. I have long been a fan of Rudy and his program at Fairhaven," said Bay Sox Director of Baseball Operations Michael Friar, who went on to note, "His players fight for him and he certainly gets a lot out of them. Rudy's teams come to compete every game." Looking forward to the upcoming season, Friar went on to add, "Our college ballplayers will benefit from his knowledge, energy and passion. I couldn't be happier to have a person of this quality and character join our Bay Sox family."

In addition to taking on duties as Pitching Coach, Rudy will join Bay Sox GM Rick Avila in running the 3rd annual Bay Sox Pitchers & Catchers Clinics this winter. These wildly popular clinics afford position specific instruction for both pitchers and catchers ages 8-18 and are nearly sold out. Local coaches have praised the clinics as a great way for high school pitchers and catchers to prepare for the season, given the short window of spring training. Registration is still open for this year's clinics. Those interested are encouraged to call Rick Avila at 508-989-2190.

The 2015 New Bedford Bay Sox season will start at the beginning of June and extend into early August with the playoffs. For more information on how to purchase your season tickets, to sign up for our Winter Pitchers & Catchers Clinics, or to make a tax-deductible donation to The New Bedford Bay Sox Foundation (a registered 501c-3 organization) call 855-BAYSOX1 or email info@nbbaysox.com.
