Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, MO (February 17, 2015)- The Missouri Mavericks late burst onto the scoreboard in the third period was not enough to match the early lead established by the Rapid City Rush on Tuesday night in Rapid City, South Dakota. The Mavs fell by a final score of 5-2 in their first of two back-to-back games against the Rush.

Rapid City controlled the scoreboard for 55 minutes of hockey before the Mavericks notched their first tally. The Tuesday night contest could be summed up in one word, physical, as collectively the teams put up 98 penalty minutes in 30 infractions (53/15 -Missouri, 45/15 - Rapid City). The first of those penalty minutes was dealt only 1 second into the game when Ryley Grantham and Kevin Harvey dropped the gloves at the opening face-off. Grantham would go on to collect 31 penalty minutes, taking part in 3 separate fights in the game, with 2 of those altercations involving former teammate Dallas Ehrhardt.

The Rush struck first at 10:21 of the first period when Kale Kerbashian scored with assistance from Jesse Schultz and Cody Ferriero. Ferriero then tallied his own goal at with under a minute left in the frame at 19:08 to give Rapid City a 2-0 lead heading into the second period. Kerbashian and Winston Day Chief were credited with the assists on Ferriero's goal.

It did not take long for the Rush to take further command of the scoreboard at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center as Dylan Clarke bested Mavs goaltender Josh Robinson 1:04 into the second period for a 3-0 lead. Mathieu Brisebois and Justin Faryna took the helpers on Clarke's goal. Scott Brannon ended the night for Robinson when he scored the Rush's fourth goal of the game at 5:32 of the second period with help from Patrick Cullen and Day Chief. Mike Clemente replaced Robinson in goal directly following the Rapid City goal giving the home team a 4-0 advantage.

The third period was a stalemate through the first 15 minutes until Team Captain and veteran left wing, Sebastien Thinel, got the Mavericks on the board at 15:01 with a power play goal assisted by Geoff Walker and Josh Brittain. Missouri then cut the Rush lead in half 4-2 when Lindsay Sparks took a feed from Jared Brown at 17:56. The Mavs pulled goaltender Mike Clemente with just over 2 minutes left in regulation in favor of a sixth skater, but Winston Day Chief took advantage of the unmanned net to boost the Rapid City margin and seal a 5-2 victory for the home team with only 27 seconds remaining on the clock.

The Missouri Mavericks will face the Rapid City Rush again tomorrow evening at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center at 7:35pm (CST).

The Mavericks return home on Friday, February 20th when they host the Allen Americans at 7:05pm (CST) at Independence Events Center. Single game tickets are available for purchase online at TicketMaster.com or in-person at the Silverstein Eye Centers Box Office at Independence Events Center.

The Mavs will be giving away their second set of trading cards to the first 1,000 fans in attendance to their Friday night contest, featuring members of the "Top 10 All-Time Mavs" vote winners: David Simoes, Dave Pszenyczny, Sebastien Thinel, Colt King, and Charlie Effinger.
