RedHawks Add Big Bat, Sign Gartrell

FARGO, ND - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have signed long-time Triple-A slugger Stefan Gartrell to a contract, the club announced. Gartrell will be in Fargo when the RedHawks open training camp on May 9.

Gartrell, 31, last played professionally in 2013 with the Gwinnett Braves, the Atlanta Braves Triple-A affiliate in the International League. Gartrell batted .267 with 13 doubles, nine home runs, 34 RBIs and 32 runs score in 75 games. He began the season with the Campeche Pirates of the Mexican League (AAA) before re-signing with the Braves. Gartrell batted .346 (9-for-26) with two RBIs in six games with Campeche.

Gartrell began his professional career in 2006 after being selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 31st round of that year's amateur draft out of the University of San Francisco. He reached the Triple-A level with the White Sox for the first time in 2009, and was traded to the Braves early in the 2011 season where he spent the next three seasons with Gwinnett.

In eight professional seasons, Gartrell has batted .270 with 178 doubles, 14 triples, 137 home runs, 502 RBIs, 511 runs scored and has a career .811 OPS in 900 games. He has played at the Triple-A level since August of 2009 through the 2013 season.

"We are looking forward to plugging Stefan into the middle of our lineup," said RedHawks Manager Doug Simunic. "He's going to bring power and experience and should be a big presence on our team in 2015."

REDHAWKS TRANSACTIONS...

- Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks INF C.J. Retherford has signed a contract to play with the Tijuana Toros of the Mexican League in 2015. Retherford batted .312 with 40 doubles, 12 home runs, 72 RBIs and 53 runs scored in 99 games for Fargo-Moorhead in 2014.

- The RedHawks have released 3B Ronnie Bourquin. He has decided to retire from professional baseball. Bourquin batted .240 with 19 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs and 52 RBIs in 95 games with Fargo-Moorhead in 2014.
