Giants Cruise Past Americans 6-2

Kennewick, WA- The rink was decked out in pink as the Tri-City Americans (26-28-0-3, 55 pts) tried to give the 5,530 fans in attendance a fond memory, but the Vancouver Giants (24-30-1-2, 51 pts) left Kennewick with a win, defeating the Americans 6-2 at the Toyota Center on Saturday night in the annual Breast Cancer Awareness Night game.
Vancouver came out and got a goal on its first shift, as Alec Baer scored less than a minute into the game to put the Giants up 1-0. Midway through the period, the Giants scored again on the power play, as Carter Popoff deflected a shot into the net to make it 2-0 Giants. Late in the first, Tri-City got on the board, as Lucas Nickles slipped the puck into the net to cut the lead to 2-1 after the first period.
In the second period, the Giants increased the lead back to two goals midway through the period as Jackson Houck fired a shot top shelf to make it 3-1. About four minutes later, the Giants increased the lead to 4-1 on a goal from Clayton Kirichenko, giving Tri-City a mountain to climb to get back into the game in the third period.
Early in the third, the Americans attempted to mount a comeback, as Justin Gutierrez slapped home a loose puck in front of the net to cut the lead to 4-2 less than a minute into the period. But the joy of the goal was short lived, as Gage Ramsay scored four minutes into the period to make it 5-2 Giants. Less than two minutes later, Zane Jones scored on the power play to put the Giants ahead 6-2. Vancouver was able to cruise the rest of the way to earn the victory.
The Americans are now 6-4 on Breast Cancer Awareness Night, and have lost two straight games on BCA night and overall.
Both teams spent 18 minutes in the penalty box, with the Americans unable to convert any of its four power play chances while the Giants were 2-of-4 on the power play tonight. Eric Comrie stopped 32 shots in the loss, while Payton Lee made 23 saves in the win.
The Americans have a couple days off before they are back in action against the Portland Winterhawks (32-20-1-3, 68 pts) this Tuesday, Feb. 17, at the Toyota Center. Game time is at 7:05 p.m. Tri-City lost to the Winterhawks on Feb. 13, 7-1, in Portland.
